  • Flight-testing your course: The importance of proof of concept

    21/06/2023 Duration: 09min

Years ago there was a course builder called Member Vault that had a fully functional free plan that enabled you to sell your course. This was a great way to get proof of concept. Once you had people buying your course/community, you could then upgrade to a higher plan (which you could afford). Unfortunately, they turned off their free version. Recently I discovered Fresh Learn, which has a fully functional free plan. If you need to upgrade, it's only $39/month ($29 if you go for a year). If you need to "No Brainer" version, it's only $69 a month ($49 if you go with a year). It's very impressive, and while other sites like Teachable are raising their fees, the two systems I'm talking about today have zero fees. Fresh Learn has no fees on any plan, and neither does New Zenler. New Zenler is $67/month and is similar to Kajabi. While Fresh Learn also has marketing tools (email lists), New Zenler (being around longer) appears to have a few more. Fresh Learn has 20/7 live chat which is nice. As a customer of New Ze

The episode offers valuable advice for podcasters looking to monetize their shows in creative and profitable ways.Check out the book Profit From Your Podcast: Proven Strategies to Turn Listeners into a LivelihoodVolley Is Going Out Of BusinessBack on episode 55, I interviewed Josh Little. • Volley Changes Coaching and Consulting in an AMAZING Way

    02/11/2022 Duration: 08min

Volley Introduces MonetizationI talk with Josh from Volley back on episode 55 and I mentioned that I wanted Volley to have a business plan. They launched Volley pro (where you get additional features) but for those who do coaching and consulting and want to get PAID, they just launch "Consult with me on Volley" and it is SO EASY.It works with Stripe and so when people pay you Stripe deposits it into your bank. Volley takes 5% of the transition and stripe will add the typical 2.9% etc feesCreate an Entry Level Consulting ServiceIf you have people who want to "Pick Your Brain" you can create a one-time service for (example) 10 minutes and then charge them a small fee. The person downloads the Volley app (it works on everything and it's free) and takes 3 minutes to ask a question. You take 2 minutes to answer it and the person has 5 more minutes to ask questions. It is a great "Get you in the door" service that can easily help you start building relationships with leads and customers. The loyalty this can build

  • Become a Professional Podcast Editor

    01/08/2022 Duration: 23min

One of the first ways I made money with my podcast is when a member of the School of Podcasting asked if I knew an editor. Who did I recommend? Me. They just wanted to talk into the microphone and hand it off to someone. That was back in 2005, and things haven't changed. Some people love editing, and other people "just want to talk into the microphone." Back on episode https://schoolofpodcasting.com/752 (752 )I interview Mark Deal and Steve Stewart from the https://www.podcasteditoracademy.com?aff=podcastcoach (Podcast Editor Academy) which is an amazing resource with tutorials on software (Hindenburg, Reaper, etc) but it also talks about the business of being a podcaster editor. Mentioned in this Episode of Profit From Your Podcast:The importance of having a niche. How Steve started out as a podcast editor without a website. Mark talks about setting expectations by having a contract with your customer. The difference between an editor, an engineer, a manager, and a story shaper. Common mistakes new podcast

  • Two Monetization Strategies That Aren't Worth The Customer Causing Headaches

    01/07/2022 Duration: 07min

We all love customers, but there are some people who are NOT your target audience, and yet we create strategies that cause unrealistic expectations in your customers, or we get a great customer who can be a little forgetful. The Black Friday SaleWhen you do one of those HOLY COW - UNBELIEVABLE DISCOUNT Black Friday kind of sale, you get two types of customers. The customer purchases and does nothing with your product as they have no skin in the game A customer who didn't read the offer, but jumps in because it is so good, and then expect much, MUCH more than what is included in the offer Consequently, (after doing two) I will not do a "Black Friday / DEEP DISCOUNT" offer. The Yearly SubscriptionThis typically brings you your target audience. They are a joy to work with, and they are action takers. However, a year later they forgot they purchased a recurring membership program. This leads to: Emails the day after they get charged asking, "Hey I didn't authorize this!" I just got an email from someone who p

  • How Much Do I Charge ?

    01/06/2022 Duration: 16min

You have a product, service, or potential sponsor and you have no idea what to charge. Some questions you may want to ask How niche is your audience? (the more niche - the more you can charge) What problem does your product solve? Can you make money with your product/service? How will you charge (avoid CPM for sponsors) Whatever you first land on for a price it is probably not enough (we all underprice). What is the cost of your product/service

  • What Problem Do You Solve?

    01/04/2022 Duration: 08min

At Podcast Movement Evolution in LA people kept pitching me, and in a matter of seconds, I was able to tell if this person understood the podcasting market or not. Most did not.  TWO TYPES OF PODCAST BUSINESSES My friend Paul Colligan from the Podcast Partnership said, "There are two types of podcast companies. One that cares about podcasting, and the other that just wants some of that sweet, sweet podcast money."  YOU NEED TO SOLVE A PROBLEM If you want to make money with a podcast, you need to solve a problem. So that can be a product or service, but it can also be that you solve the problem of providing information that is not available anywhere else.  THE TING ABOUT THREE YEARS I do need to clarify that I've said it takes three years to build an audience, and that is when people I interviewed for my book Profit From Your Podcast started making notable income. However, it's not the three years that enable them to make money. It is the quality of the content. Don't keep making episodes thinking, "If I can ju

  • The Dos and Don'ts of Dynamic Content

    26/01/2022 Duration: 08min

Dynamic Content Flavors Pre and Post Rolls This enables you to add dynamic content (ads, or other promotions) at the beginning and end of your show/ Mid Rolls This enables you to content  (ads, or other promotions) anywhere in your show (you select where, and the content is inserted) The dynamic part is you can change the content later and it will update all the episodes that have "Spots."  Dynamic Ad Companies When I did the research forhttps://www.profitfromourpodcast.com/book ( my book) I used a dynamic ad insertion company that put generic ads into my show. It paid .0017 per episode. If you have 2000 downloads that calculates to $3.40 (so these only work for people with HUGE audiences.  Things to Think About You need to get consistent with your recording volume as you want the dynamic content to  be the same volume as the rest of the episode.  You need to think about how you are going to lead into the content and come out of it. You can leave a very small space as when you pick the spot you can go down to

  • Are You Promoting Your Competition for Pennies? - The Blind Side of Crowd Funding

    30/11/2021 Duration: 11min

There are some things you may regret doing in podcasting. Compare your show to others (always a bad idea - instead focus on your podcast Track how much time you are actually spending creating an episode (it's longer than you think) Use "Shoutouts" as a reward. This takes up time in your episode that used to be content, and in my case, I hadn't stipulated who could or could not be someone I should shout out.  You always assume everything thinks like you. They don't. I would never go on a podcast where someone is a podcast consultant and attempt to get people to sign up for the School of Podcasting. Now, I have been on many shows about podcasting because the host asked me to be a guest. Even with an invite, I try to provide information that will help people be better podcasters. I rarely feel I blatantly ask people to join the School of Podcasting.  However, other people (and I don't believe this was malicious) wanted to support me by promoting their service that was in direct competition with my services. I'v

  • Quit Wondering if it Will Sell: Creating a Focus Group For Your Online Course For Free

    23/11/2021 Duration: 04min

You've come up with an idea for a course. You put together some videos, pdf, and more, but you're worried about putting out the money for something like Teachable. You are pondering using something like Udemy, but then the only way you can contact your customers is through Udemy.  I found out about Membervault and I love their business model. You can use if for free up to your 100th customer. Then it's only $19/month. This provides a great way to have a website, course tool, and community tool all in one for free.  Is there a catch? Kind of... You need to provide the videos. So you could use something like Vimeo ($7/month) or you could create a YouTube channel and have all the videos listed as unlisted (somewhat "security through obscurity). Then later once you have proof of concept, you can move to a different solution if you want to go bigger.  Membervalut has its own unique feature set in that they have a Marketplace to promote your course, and the tool is drop-dead easy.  MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE https:/

  • The Number 1 Reason Your Podcast Isn't Boosting Sales

    09/11/2021 Duration: 08min

Selling is 90% mental. I used to teach sales many moons ago. When I work with clients who have products and services to sell, when I listen to their podcast their pitch sounds like this:"Hey, like if you need, I mean you don't have to, but, like, if you kinda want to, you can maybe, like, go to, you know, my website (then said so fast you can't understand it)." When I ask people why they did that they said they felt "Salesy." This typically is based on a bad stereotype of some sleazy used car salesman from the 1970s who is selling you a bucket of bolts that is going to barely make it off the car lot.Your podcast is not a bucket of bolts so shift your thoughts from "Selling" to "Helping" or "Informing." You just need to find the right people who need your products and services. When someone says no, then they weren't your target customer. I had a friend who was bummed she wasn't getting any speaking gigs. She never mentioned it once in her podcast.  It doesn't have to be a giant pitch. It could be as simple as

  • How To Set Your Podcast Up To Accept Bitcoin

    25/10/2021 Duration: 05min

Today I talk about an income stream that didn't exist when I wrote the book and that is bitcoin. It doesn't cost anything to get set up, and depending on your audience, this could end up being another source of income. Without really promoting the value for value model on the School of Podcasting and yet I've made $85 since June. Now I'm OBVIOUSLY not going to retire on that money, but think about how much that might be if I promoted it (or if my audience was more tied into cryptocurrency). All you need to do is install the https://telegram.org/ (telegram software )(free) and it takes maybe 5 minutes.  Once your show is set up, then instruct your audience to use apps from http://www.newpodcastapps.com (newpodcastapps.com) and they can set a value to give you as they listen to your show.   Videoshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tpY1UD6a3gQ (How to receive enable your podcast to receive bitcoin) https://www.loom.com/share/bcbb2e8d768e44f38dc11926ba22bed8 (How to Transfer Bitcoin into Your Wallet)   Mentioned In
