Over the past couple of months, we've been looking at a different - and equally essential - thirst that we experience as humans... soul thirst. God designed our souls to thirst for Him. Every decision we make, every action we take, every thought we think or word we speak is intended to be inhabited by His presence. In the 'old days' we rode around town in the bed of grandpa's truck, rode our bikes, scooters, and skateboards with no helmets, elbow or knee pads; we drank right out of the garden hose, and went on family road trips without even thinking about wearing a seat belt. Those things and so many more would be considered 'unsafe' or even illegal today! We are a culture that has become obsessed with safety. We deadbolt our doors, have locks on our mailboxes, and cameras on every corner. But try as we might to ensure our own security, nothing is absolutely foolproof. We long to know that not only are we worthy of attention, but that we have purpose, we make a difference, that we matter. Our culture tells us that popularity and influence are the measuring sticks by which our worthiness is assessed. But the Bible tells us that our worth was established before we even had a name. That our purpose was ordained by God before we took our first breath. And from what little I know about their lives, I'm not sure they ever found it. There is a hunger in the soul of every person that demands to be satisfied. And there are a myriad of options that humanity has used to attempt to fill the void. It might be food, shopping, adrenaline, busyness, or any number of other things. But our satisfaction strategy is faulty. Because we're not really hungry for a what... what the soul longs for is a Who. 08/10/2025 Duration: 43minI love a good jigsaw puzzle. It's a different kind of challenge for my brain -- which I find both fun and relaxing. But have you ever heard of a Shmuzzle? It's a jigsaw puzzle of a whole 'nother kind. It's one of those puzzles where every piece is the same basic shape. So there are endless ways the pieces can fit together, but just because you can make a piece fit, doesn't mean it belongs there! A shmuzzle is neither fun or relaxing... at least not for me! Have you ever considered the difference between 'fitting in' and belonging? We'll unpack that difference in our series, Identity Crisis: Becoming Who We Are Together In Christ this Sunday. We all long to belong. But often we settle for just fitting in, which never truly satisfies our souls. We've already talked about the longing for attention and affection; this week, we'll look at the need for affirmation. You might think that affirmation is just another word for encouragement. But it's actually very different. To encourage someone is to cheer them on - to give them courage to keep going. But affirmation goes beyond that - it helps another see beneath their doing and catch a glimpse of their becoming. Affirmation says, "This is how I see Jesus in you." 10/09/2025 Duration: 43minThe first time I ever received an Amber Alert on my cellphone, I was just about to see a play at the Keller Auditorium in Portland. It took me a minute to figure out what it was, and then a few more to turn it off! Amber Alerts are still used across the United States and internationally. As of December 2024, the system has helped aid in the successful recovery 0f 1,268 children. Now, you know how the Amber Alert system works… it is, quite literally a ginormous, real-life game of telephone – except the info doesn’t get garbled in the transmission process. But what would happen if the person whose job it was to actually activate the Amber Alert, just entered the data in the system and then did… nothing? There is more to being a watchman, to staying alert, vigilant, and awake than just gathering info. If you don’t spread the news, well, then... what's the point? 03/09/2025 Duration: 37minIn the Old Testament, a watchman's job was to stand guard in a tower or on a city wall to detect any impending threat, like an approaching army or storm, and then alert the city inhabitants to take shelter or prepare to defend their city. The Old Testament prophets served as spiritual watchmen, warning people of sin and calling them to repentance. Whether providing physical or spiritual exhortation, a watchman was to be vigilant, alert, paying close attention to what was going on in the world around them. As we near the end of Mark's gospel and our series, Upside Down Kingdom, we find Jesus warning and encouraging His disciples about what would happen in the future. Though they still didn't grasp the meaning of all He told them, He urged them to keep watch and remain faithful, even in the midst of confusion and persecution. 19/08/2025 Duration: 31minDid you ever succumb to the late-night spiels of infomercial pitchmen like Billy Mays? Billy was the enthusiastic promoter of products like Oxi-Clean, Orange Glo, and Kaboom, among others. Or maybe you gave in to the Ginsu knife, Snuggie or Shamwow sales pitch. But wait… there’s MORE! Or maybe, there’s not. Sometimes things do deliver and you get exactly what you bargained for. But there are also times when something is all flash, no substance and you end up disappointed. It’s not such a big deal when we’re talking about a product. You win some, you lose some. But how about when what’s ‘not as advertised’ is a promise, a policy, or even a person? Unmet expectations can lead to disillusionment and even despair. As we come to week 12 of our series, Upside Down Kingdom: The Gospel According to Mark, we begin to see a different side of Jesus as He confronts situations where people, traditions, and even religious leaders aren’t living up to what they claim to be—and Jesus doesn’t shy away from addressing it.

14/08/2025 Duration: 44minI've always been a planner. I like routines and knowing what to expect. My dad however, liked to change things up. I remember as a kid, driving home after being in town. From my perspective, there was a 'right' way to get home. But dad took a different route. "Where are we going?" I asked. "Home" he replied. "But this isn't the way home, " I said. He responded gently, "We're taking the scenic route." It wasn't the route I expected, but he was doing the driving. The journey of being a Christ-follower is a lot like traveling the 'scenic route.' We think we know the way to get where we want to go, but God has a different path for us to travel. Following Him means surrendering our plans, our right to call the shots and going where He leads - even if the road is unfamiliar or intimidating. It's the trendy way to say that things aren't making sense... they're not adding up - kind of like the way 'new math' makes no sense to those of us with old brains. In Isaiah 55:8 we read, "My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts," says the Lord. And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine." It's understandable that Jesus' disciples would struggle with the Father's plan, for the inbreaking of the Upside Down Kingdom into our world. Through Isaiah, God had told them His ways don't make sense. But shouldn't God's plan be better than imagined, not harder? Happier, richer, more beautiful? The struggle to make sense of it all - was real. And not just for the disciples in Jesus' day. It's still hard for us. The French phrase, meaning "already seen" is described as a phenomenon of feeling like one has lived through the present situation in the past... like you've been here before... except you haven't. That's kinda the sense we get as we come to Mark chapter 8 in our series Upside Down Kingdom: The Gospel According to Mark. Once again, we find stories of famished followers, disgruntled disciples, contentious clerics and another blind man in search of restored vision. Haven't we been down this road before? Though the stories are familiar, they are also unique. Jesus is underscoring for His disciples - and for all of us - the counter-cultural characteristics of His Upside-Down Kingdom. This week we're in Mark chapter 7, where we find Jesus going head-to-head with the Pharisees. And once again, they are more than a bit peeved at Jesus and His disciples. Apparently, Jesus & company are exhibiting blatant disregard for the Jewish laws regarding... are you ready for this?... washing their hands. Actually, it wasn't even a law; it was a tradition. And while there was deeper purpose infused into the tradition, the Pharisees had totally missed it. And hard as it is to admit, sometimes we are prone to missing it too. As Dorothy wakes up in her own bed at the end of the movie, still murmuring those words, it reinforces the meaning of coming back to a place of safety, where you are known, loved and welcomed. Dorothy has had her grand adventure, but there's nothing better than coming home and sleeping in your own bed again.
