When my friend turned 30, her parents began a tradition of celebrating that milestone birthday with an extended family gathering at a resort or vacation home somewhere. That year, her celebration was held at a resort on the Oregon coast. Growing up on the east side of the Cascades, she didn't vacation at the coast. Why drive that far when there were lakes and campgrounds galore in her own backyard?
