  • Episode 666 - "Queen and Slim" (2019)

    09/12/2019 Duration: 10min

Hi everyone! Welcome back to Matinee Monday. Today’s film is not for the faint of heart, nor for anyone who enjoys a feel good story. I actually left the theatre struggling with a lot of themes, which makes it a great film for conversation, but is that the same thing as a great film? I’ll let you know about that, and the double standards for films featuring black lives, in just a minute. However, for a few other films related to today’s film, check out our review for MOONLIGHT (Episode #406), which QUEEN & SLIM borrows heavily from thematically speaking, and THE HIGHWAYMEN (Episode #493), which looks at Bonnie & Clyde from law enforcement’s point of view. Before the review, we’ll have a promo from the Ocho Duro Parlay Hour. Every episode, the ODPH Crew work their way through a diverse bunch of topics, everything from comics to movies to television to sports. You can find them on Twitter and Instagram @ODParlayHour and on Facebook @ochoduroparlayhour. Huge shoutout to the ODPH crew for all their suppor

  • Episode 665 - "Hala" (2019)

    08/12/2019 Duration: 10min

Hi everyone! Welcome back for our final week of reviews before we break for the holidays. It’s been a long year here at One Movie Punch, and we’ll be using the break to take the podcast in for some much-needed maintenance and return with a fresh slate of content. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy this week of content, beginning today with Streaming Sundays. Today’s feature will be from AppleTV+, who have had some major issues regarding their next feature, THE BANKER, specifically sexual abuse allegations leveled against Bernard Garrett Jr., son of the film’s protagonist and co-producer on the film. I think AppleTV+ is doing the right thing in pulling the film, even if I think it clearly did the wrong thing in purchasing the property without due diligence. Fortunately, we won’t be talking about that film and the sticky wicket it has to navigate to see the light of day. Instead, we’ll have a lovely coming of age drama scoring well with the critics and the fans. Also, as part of a settlement with the Pigeon Pro

  • Episode 663 - "Little Joe" (2019)

    06/12/2019 Duration: 10min

Hi everyone! It’s Friday, so we’re back with another Fantastic Fest review from Andrew Campbell. Today’s review I thought wasn’t going to make it, and I was getting really frustrated with him, but then someone sent me this awesome houseplant and now it’s fine, and I’m fine, and everything’s fine. You know what else is fine? Andrew’s previous reviews, which include THE POOL (Episode #656), critical darling DOLEMITE IS MY NAME (Episode #649), and ensemble film extraordinaire KNIVES OUT (Episode #652). I wonder who sent this flower? Oh! I guess you’ll want to check out our review for ANNA AND THE APOCALYPSE (Episode #425) for... no reason. Before the review, we’ll have a promo from the DC High podcast. Every episode, D & C provide a heaping dose of edutainment as they work their way through a high-school themed curse. • Episode 661 - "Zéro M2" (2015)

    04/12/2019 Duration: 12min

Hi everyone! Welcome back for another review. Today, I’ll be reviewing ZÉRO M2 (2015), an incredible short film from Matthieu Landour Engel, multimedia artist and friend of the podcast. I’ve been conversing with Mat off and on since the podcast started, first about his Instagram comics, now for his excellent short film. I was lucky to connect with him recently to discuss today’s film, and I feel privileged to review the film for all of you. And if you like what you hear today, definitely head over to batcollective.tv where you can see more of Mat’s solo work, along with an immense library of animated shorts produced in collaboration with his spouse, Bali Engel. All of this means we’ll have a bit of a format switch for today. Instead of the usual trailer segments, I’ll be interspersing segments from our interview throughout the review. If you like this format, be sure to check out our previous review/interviews for BULLITT COUNTY (Episode #549), THE CHAIR (Episode #550), ECHOES OF YOU (Episode #556), AFTER 82:

    02/12/2019 Duration: 10min

Hi everyone! Welcome back to Matinee Mondays! We’re continuing the Oscar contenders this week with a review of A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD. Get ready to hear a lot of repressed tears and sobbing, but that’s okay. If you want to get a taste of that, definitely check out my review for WON’T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR? (Episode #193). I’ll do my best to keep it together. Before the review, we’ll have a promo from the Mitchell Report Unleashed podcast. • Episode 658 - "The Irishman" (2019)

    01/12/2019 Duration: 11min

Hi everyone! Welcome back for another week of reviews. We’ve got two more weeks left of reviews for we break for the end of the year. The Oscar race is heating up in theaters nationwide, with multiple top-quality films in theaters, including today’s film until it appeared on Netflix just before Thanksgiving, which makes it perfect for Streaming Sundays. I waited until it hit Netflix to see it, and I’ll tell you why in a minute, but for a couple other films related today’s film, check out our review for SILENCE (Episode #061) for another Scorsese film, along with our recent review for the heavily-inspired-by-Scorsese film JOKER (Episode #630), now the highest grossing DC Movie of all time. We also have another Patreon episode up at patreon.com/onemoviepunch. This week we present part two of “Stories from the Fire”, a collection of the audio essays and mini-dramas from last year’s wildfire evacuation series. It’s a nice way to look back on our podcast, and a nice checklist of goals to review. I’d say we did pre

  • Episode 656 - "The Pool" (2018)

    29/11/2019 Duration: 09min

Hi everyone! It’s Friday, so Andrew’s back with another Fantastic Fest feature, the best crocodile movie you’ll see this year. Now, I know what you’re thinking: What about CRAWL (Episode #563)? See, that’s an alligator film, and you can tell from the snout, but that’s not really why you’re here, is it? For a few other films from Andrew, however, check out his recent reviews for KNIVES OUT (Episode #652), DOLEMITE IS MY NAME (Episode #649), and FRACTURED (Episode #642). Before the review, we’ll have a promo from our good friends at the Seeking Human Victims podcast. Every episode, Dan from One Good Scare Productions covers a horror film in depth. 28/11/2019 Duration: 10min

Hi everyone! Welcome back for another review, this time for a documentary about a farm in our backyard here in Ventura County, CA. This week has been heavy with documentaries, as I get caught up on the potential Oscar nominees for this year. Check out my review earlier this week for ONE CHILD NATION (Episode #651) and come back later this week for Saturday’s review of BE NATURAL: THE UNTOLD STORY OF ALICE GUY-BLACHÉ, in our ongoing series, “Under the Kanopy”. Before the review, we’ll have a promo from our good friends at the BiCurean podcast. Every episode, Erik and Aicila find new perspectives on a variety of mainstream and obscure topics. • Episode 654 - "Rust Creek" (2018)

    27/11/2019 Duration: 08min

Hi everyone! Against my better judgment, we’re welcoming back Shane Hyde to the podcast for another horror movie review, this time hopefully one he enjoys a bit more. After last week’s review for “Nightmare Cinema”, I’m sort of surprised he came back for more. For a few other reviews from Shane, check out “Nightmare Cinema” (Episode #647), “Starship Troopers” (Episode #447), and his incredible narration duties as part of Reign of Terror 2019. Before the review, we’ll have a promo from our good friends at the Moviedrone podcast. Every episode, Marc and Steve sit down to discuss films, including a main feature, some homework for each other, a question from the audience, and my favorite segment, Marc’s Movie Impressions. Don’t miss their guest review here for Reign of Terror 2019, covering the indie darling, “Terrifier” (Episode #606). They weren’t much help, though, to be honest. At least not for me. You can find them on Twitter and Instagram @movie_drone and on Facebook @Moviedronepod. Subscribe to stay curren

  • Episode 652 - "Knives Out" (2019)

    25/11/2019 Duration: 09min

Hi everyone! One of the filmmakers that turned me back on to film was Rian Johnson. It happened about a third of the way into BRICK, when I found myself totally engrossed with no idea where the film was heading. After a brief jaunt within the Star Wars universe for THE LAST JEDI, he’s back with another excellent film, this time a murder mystery like no other and every other. Andrew will be up in a minute with his thoughts, as this was a Fantastic Fest feature, but I can’t recommend it enough. Before the review, we’ll have a promo for our good friends at the Comics in Motion podcast. Every episode, Dave and Chris review a film based on a comic book, providing a lot of key backstory for appreciating the subtler elements. Don’t miss their guest reviews as part of Reign of Terror 2019, first for ALIEN VS PREDATOR (Episode #605), then later incognito for 30 DAYS OF NIGHT (Episode #626). I certainly appreciated their help. You can find them on Twitter and Instagram @ComicsInMotionP and on Facebook @ComicsInMotionPo

  • Episode 651 - "One Child Nation" (2019)

    24/11/2019 Duration: 11min

Hi everyone! Welcome back for another week of reviews! We’re continuing our Streaming Sundays series with a review of the Amazon Original documentary, ONE CHILD NATION, which was released in theaters earlier this year, and is now exclusively available on Amazon Prime. It’s a strong contender for the award season and offers us a rare opportunity to examine the results of a grand social experiment. We’ll be back next week with a review of the second Scorsese film from Netflix this year, THE IRISHMAN, another great Oscar contender, but one I waited to watch after it was available at home. Because three and a half hours. It’s Sunday, so that also means there’s another Patreon exclusive episode available at patreon.com/onemoviepunch. This week, I decided to re-cut and re-master a series of audio essays and dramas from last year, collectively entitled “Stories from the Fire”. It was one way that helped us process our wildfire evacuation last year, the second time for our family since moving to California. While you

  • Episode 650 - "Her Smell" (2018)

    23/11/2019 Duration: 07min

Hi everyone! Welcome back for our next entry in our series Under the Kanopy, exploring the critically acclaimed, if not commercially viable offerings on Kanopy, a library and university funded streaming service that offers six free streams with nothing more than a library card. While other streaming services feature blockbusters and microbudget works, Kanopy delivers classic content from years past, along with modern films from partnerships with A24, Kino Lorber, and more. Today’s film is an independent feature from Alex Ross Perry, looking at the riot grrl scene, and the double standards of women rockers. Check out the last three installments in the series with “The Image Book” (Episode #629), “3 Faces” (Episode #636), and “Ash is the Purest White” (Episode #643). Before the review, we’ll have a promo from Daniel Shaw of The History of Violence podcast. Every episode, Daniel takes a look at how violence has impacted our world, from obvious and unique perspectives. Also, be sure to catch his guest review for

  • Episode 649 - "Dolemite Is My Name" (2019)

    22/11/2019 Duration: 08min

Hi everyone! Andrew’s back this week with another Fantastic Fest feature, a film starring one of the greatest comedians of all time, Eddie Murphy. I’m excited to hear his take on this film, as blacksploitation films are a personal favorite of mine, especially the films of Dolemite. He’ll let you know his thoughts in a minute, but for a few recent reviews from Andrew, check out “Fractured” (Episode #642), “In The Shadow Of The Moon” (Episode #635), and the absolutely amazing “Jojo Rabbit” (Episode #631). You definitely won’t regret that last one. Before the review, we’ll have a promo from our friends at the Good Game, Great Game podcast. Every episode, the crew talks about the video games they’ve been playing, along with any related and unrelated topics. Be sure to check out Andrew Orsie’s guest review for “Scream 3” (Episode #600) as part of Reign of Terror 2019! You can find them on Twitter and Instagram @GoodGreatGame. • Episode 648 - "Framing John DeLorean" (2019)

    21/11/2019 Duration: 08min

Hi everyone! Just me today, as I continue taking a deep dive into documentaries, a semi-revival of our Documentary Thursdays segment from last year. This week, I’ll be tackling “Framing John DeLorean”, a film that promises a lot more than it delivers, much like the car of the same name. You’ll find out what I mean in a little bit, but for two other recommendations, definitely check out “Meeting Gorbachev” (Episode #641), last week’s documentary feature, and “Casting JonBenét”, a 2017 Netflix documentary that actually delivers what this film promises. Before the review, we’ll be showing more love for our friends at the Ocho Duro Parlay Hour. Every week, the whole crew sit down and go over a bunch of topics, from sports to comics to television and movies. Huge shoutout to the ODPH crew for all their support during Reign of Terror 2019. You can find them on Twitter and Instagram @ODParlayHour and on Facebook @ochoduroparlayhour. Lots of great content on a variety of topics! Subscribe to stay current with the lat

  • Episode 647 - "Nightmare Cinema" (2018)

    20/11/2019 Duration: 08min

Hi everyone! Welcome back for another review. It took some negotiations mediated by One Movie Spouse, but we’re allowing Shane Hyde to return to the podcast with a new series of reviews covering contemporary horror films. We figured it was the best place to put him after his extensive role in Reign of Terror 2019. Expect to see Shane around here a lot more often in the coming weeks, and especially next year, starting with today’s review of a critical darling. Although, he proves results may vary. And for a few other reviews form Shane, check out “Polar” (Episode #412), “They Shall Not Grow Old” (Episode #426), and the collaboration that inspired part of Reign of Terror 2019 during his review for “Starship Troopers” (Episode #447). Before the review, we’ll have a promo from our friends at the Donna Martin Graduates podcast. Every episode, Kelly Senatra breaks down an episode of the pop-culture sensation, “Beverly Hills 90210”. Subscribe and get caught up as they continue their journey through season one. And d
