What do you do when Jesus turns out to be someone or something other than what you thought He was or hoped He would be? Even Jesus disappointed people, not exactly seeming like the Messiah they had longed for. Sometimes we don't get what we want, but we get exactly what we need. Through Jesus, God has acted in human experience. Through Jesus, God has revealed that God is on your side. We see God's commitment to all people, especially the poor, the suffering, and the afflicted. Jesus offers us transformation beyond what we can imagine.

As we continue to move through our Who is This Man? series, the picture of who Jesus is becomes clearer. I hope that you have noticed some of things his first followers noticed. This Sunday, we will explore the concept of Sabbath. The Hebrew understanding of Sabbath was a time when one could remember that they were made in the image of God. Jesus poses a fundamental question about the Sabbath. Can one honor God while ignoring human need?

Jesus’ first sermon in his home congregation in Nazareth suggests otherwise. He reads words from many years earlier and emphatically states that they are relevant to today. Today can be frightening for us, because today forces us to lay aside our nostalgia for the past and our dreams for the future, focusing us on what is immediate and urgent. Jesus’ words that day were so frightening that the crowd gathered tried to throw him off a cliff! In today however, we find meaning and focus for right now.
