Shreya Nandy’s innovation story started way back in high school when she developed a pesticide detection and remover kit for produce. In fact, it was this innovation that brought Nandy to Arizona after ASU spotted her at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. Each year, ASU students team up to compete at the American Astronautical Society CanSat competition. Their mission? To design and build a space-type system and compete against teams around the world! This year teams were tasked with building, launching and landing a can satellite equipped with temperature and air pressure sensor, a communication system and a parachute. Each can satellite also contained an egg that must remain intact throughout its journey. Anthony McCourt helped ASU’s Team Butter (Ballistic Universal Times Trajectory Egg Recovery) take home fifth place out of 33 total teams. Hear McCourt’s story on the Innovation Happens Podcast.

Phoenix, Arizona has a goal of achieving a 40% waste diversion rate by 2020 and it's innovations like Surya Iyer’s that will help the city get there. Surya developed Smart-Sort, an IOT based sorting machine that efficiently sorts recyclable waste at source to improve diversion rates for institutions. Smart-Sort eventually merged with Hygiea, another ASU startup that similarly uses IOT to make waste management more manageable. Controlling stuff with your mind? Yes, please! Ryan Kemmer's innovation, MindEffect, does exactly that. Using a wireless EEG interface to monitor brain rhythms and map their fluctuations to different sonic parameters, Kemmer can basically make different sound effects occur by using just the power of his brain. A team of students and faculty from the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering represented ASU at this year’s Intel Cup in Shanghai, China. ASU’s team, who developed a robotic guide dog meant to assist individuals with visual impairments more efficiently and inexpensively than alternative options, brought home a first prize award! ASU Online Graduate student Egbert Oostburg is making a name for himself in the emerging drone industry! His start-up, Drone Aviator, is a data technology company that is dedicated to providing drone-related data to the market. Oostburg’s data allows insurance companies to more accurately price risk for drone owners so that more users can enjoy drone technology. Additionally, through its SkyClub platform Drone Aviator enables drone owners to find safe and exciting places to fly drones and connect with fellow drone owners. Elevia is a functioning prototype that helps protect people from biting insects. Charged by Johnson & Johnson to develop a solution, Justin and his Innovation Space team members built a personal mosquito catcher that attracts traps and retains mosquitos, preventing them from harming individuals. The team combined readily available components and utilized them in a way not previously seen in order to create something truly innovative.

This week we learn what it means to be a leader of innovation from two Mentors for Academic and Personal Success (MAPS) in ASU’s College of Nursing and Health Innovation. MAPS not only help first-year freshmen transition to college life and their studies, they help freshmen with one of the most important projects to kick off their time at ASU: the Health Innovation Exhibition Project. Brynne and Jasmine have a unique perspective on innovation because they are involved in the process of unearthing possible innovations with their students as well as guiding and coaching them through the innovation process.
