Innovation Happens

Beth Tellman is a Ph.D. candidate in the School of Geographical Science and Urban Planning at ASU and Co-founder/Chief of Science of the startup Cloud to Street. Cloud to Street reduces scientific barriers to data by making flood information from satellites available to vulnerable and traditionally “data-poor” communities around the world. With this data, these communities are better able to better assess risks of disaster as well as plan, prepare and respond to environmental disturbance. We’re so often advised against the myth of the technological fix, but Cloud to Street is a fantastic reminder that, if we know how to harness it, technology can provide us with the insight and agency we need to change the world and make a lasting impact.

How do you create a brand for a user who can’t actually see your brand? That’s the question that Stephanie grappled with during her Innovation Space project. Stephanie, a visual communications designer, helped develop Naavi, a set of bone conduction headphones that can help those with visual impairments echolocate and more confidently navigate new spaces. Hear her story and find out how she came to advise students in Innovation Space!

One of the biggest misconceptions about innovation is that it is the result of those “Eureka!” moments we read so much about. While on some occasions it might very well be true, what we most often find to be the case is that innovation does not actually happen instantaneously. Innovation takes time and effort. It takes trial and error. It takes learning and reflection. Innovation is a journey that’s characterized less by what we do and more by who we are. This week we're taking you on that journey of innovation and discovery with ASU student Nico De Bruyn as our guide. Nico will recount his time at ASU through the lens of innovation. He will talk to us about what he has learned, how he has grown and how he has developed capacity as an innovator at ASU.
