    Wes is the owner and operator of all the Roasters Coffee stands in the Tri-Cities. An interesting fact about Wes is that he was a straight F student in high school and is now a successful entrepreneur.   Wes owns 11 Roasters here in the Tri-Cities and is opening 2 more. There is one in Walla Walla and 2 that will be opening in 2020 in Spokane. Wes did not know as a boy that he was going to be an entrepreneur. In his twenties he lost his job and found himself without many options. He played guitar and made coffee! He started in 2006 and coffee was expanding.  He moved to TC in 2006 not knowing that it really even existed. He googled the state of Washington and found the Tri-Cities. He flew up here and fell in love with the area and saw the opportunity. He moved his wife and small children up here and within one year, he had his first coffee shop.  Building a team and finding leaders has been a difficult road.     Podcast 29  Carlos Martinez Carlos is the owner of Dura-Shine Clean. The funniest thing that Carlos did this year was sit by his pool in the middle of winter! They just bought a house and were anxiously waiting for summer!   His family moved here from Mexico in the late 60’s not knowing any English. He found himself being the interpreter for his parents. His parents encouraged him to stay in school so he wouldn’t have to work as hard as they had to. He loves math so much that he took some accounting courses. He always knew he would be an executive in business.  After being laid off from working for the State of Washington, he worked for another cleaning company. He and his mother both enjoyed the work, and that is how Dura-Shine was birthed.  Along the way he enlisted his friends as mentors who also had their own cleaning companies. He spent time with them learning hands-on. His mentor when he was with the state taught him how to be a professional and he has applied what he learned when growing his business.

    Emily is the Director of Kennewick Parks & Rec Department. A fun fact about her is she won the homecoming burping contest! Emily felt as she was summoned to her current position. She had the great opportunity to work for the Economic Development Department for the city, and while she was in that position, she was asked to take on the director role. During those years with the city, she showed them that she could work with people and build relationships. The department had been floundering for a couple years and they believed that she could help them move forward. As an agile leader, when she is looking for team members, she is looking for a can-do attitude, a problem solver who will work just as hard as she is. She has high expectations and she finds that when her team members also have high expectations of themselves and the projects they are working on, they can accomplish hard things.     Anne is the Executive Director of The Academy of Children’s Theater. Anne is a self-proclaimed musical theater nerd, possibly a musical theater buff! Her dream came true when a trivia question came up in a game and she knew the answer because of a musical! Anne runs the local children’s theater and is an alumnus of the theater as well. She was in their very first production. She decided during a performance, and her instructor congratulated her on making a good choice. That was a defining moment when knew that the Children’s Theater needed to be in the Tri- Cities. When she was in college, she created an internship at ACT and was then offered a position right out of college. She’s done everything from teaching classes to fundraising. She then moved away to the city for 5 years and moved back to take care of family. It was at that time the position opened at ACT. When she was ready to move to Seattle, she decided to move to LA instead. The risk she took was saying yes to housing opportunities, job offers, etc.

A funny thing about Jay is that when he was a child traveling in the car with his parents, his mother would call him Jabberwocky!    What Jay loves about his position is that you put your foot on the gas and make things happen or not. It’s really all up to you. He really enjoys being responsible for the successes and failures. He looks back and wishes he had become an entrepreneur sooner. There were two pivotal moments in his career that led him to where he is today. One of those experiences was when he was promoted from Controller to CFO. They were in acquisition mode and they were going from having three companies to four. At the time his mentor was retiring as well. The other time was when he accepted a role with a Chamber of Commerce. His grandfather was a security guard when they were building the site, and both his mother and father worked at the Hanford site. Chris worked at the site for 40 years before retiring. His first mentor out at the area was the man that hired him for his summer employment. He sat next to a gentleman on the bus heading back into town to close-out his seasonal employment, and when he did, human resources asked him if he would be interested in an operator job. When he went into the interview, it was the same gentleman that he sat next to on the bus that was doing the interview. He learned from this experience that finding out about people personally when hiring is very important. He believes that a good boss must be a good mentor.
