Episodes

  • Episode 21: U2 vs. R.E.M. featuring Brent Kick

    10/07/2018 Duration: 01h38min

Great great great episode with Brent Kick, who is like the oracle of music knowledge. We'll be back soon enough with more content but I'm proud of this one.

  • Episode 20: Our Top Ten Most Influential Albums

    28/06/2018 Duration: 57min

We took a brief break from the format to elevate another FB meme for no reason other than our own amusement. This was recorded a bit over a week ago.

  • Episode 19: Big Star versus The Replacements with Jim Gross

    18/06/2018 Duration: 01h44min

We were joined by Jim Gross to talk baseball as well as two bands who remain extremely underappreciated despite their later infamy as bands that every good band appreciates. Our Patreon is here: https://www.patreon.com/NameTwoBands So far we've been doing this for free and we'll keep doing it but if you have some spare coin, even a dollar a month, and like this pod then kick some of it our way. Songs on this podcast: Big Star - "Ballad of El Goodo" The Replacements - "Unsatisfied" Art Brut - "The Replacements"

  • Episode 18: A Conversation About Music With Josh Martinez

    19/05/2018 Duration: 01h57min

The two Andys exchanged thoughts about the albums they assigned to each other before engaging with Josh in a very open ended and interesting conversation. Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/NameTwoBands

  • Episode 17: The Boognish

    11/05/2018 Duration: 01h41min

This episode is deeply weird and it's great. It's just Andy and Andy talking exclusively about Ween. By Ween.

  • Episode 16: Female Pop Appreciation with Ryan Morgan pt.2

    08/05/2018 Duration: 02h05min

Part two of our conversation with Ryan Morgan concerns his opinions on modern female pop stars. His thesis is that not only are we in a golden age of female pop stars who are both artistically interesting and also important culturally and even politically but that we've never actually seen anything like this. We've never had women pop stars, and WOC pop stars at that, in anything like their number or in terms of them making their own choices for themselves. In the course of the conversation we touched on how #MeToo hasn't really hit the music industry yet, how female artistry had been stamped out in the past because of the patriarchy of the music industry and society, among many other side topics. Songs sampled in this episode: Beyonce - "Formation" Miley Cyrus - "Jolene" Ariana Grande - "Dangerous Woman" Taylor Swift - "Style" Amy Winehouse - "Tears Dry On Their Own" Janelle Monáe - "Make Me Feel" Rihanna - "Man Down" The Libertines - "Boys in the Band"

  • Episode 16: Female Pop Appreciation with Ryan Morgan, pt.1

    06/05/2018 Duration: 01h19min

We're joined this week by Ryan Morgan who was here to discuss why the current generation of female pop singers aren't just great musicians in an unprecedented way, but also that they matter culturally. We don't talk about any of that in part one, in fact we don't talk about music it all for the first forty minutes so if you don't care about baseball or soccer you should skip to that point. After that we talk about Ryan's ongoing series of essays about Hootie and the Blowfish, the Brown Andy reviews the latest Telestrion album, and the two Andys return to the album review series. Telestrion album can be found here: https://telestrion1.bandcamp.com/album/blazing-in-the-sky You can check out Ryan's music here: https://ryanmorgan.bandcamp.com/

  • Episode 15: Prog Rock Roundabout with Scott Jeffries and Andy Bellemer

    25/04/2018 Duration: 01h46min

We're once again joined by Scott Jeffries as well as first time guest Andy Bellemer as we have a wide ranging discussion about progressive rock. It was long enough to be broken in to two parts but in tribute to prog we left it at the excessive length. New Telestrion available here: https://telestrion1.bandcamp.com/album/blazing-in-the-sky The Cardiacs - Tarred and Feathered: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVjSycDJatc

  • Episode 14.5: The Gene Simmons Vault Experience

    23/04/2018 Duration: 50min

In this special edition of the pod the Samford Andy talks about his experience of having The Vault hand delivered to him by Gene Simmons as well as how much KISS has meant to him. http://www.genesimmonsvault.com/ YouTube links: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2t2uHsHylDc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Li6xi2NbyY&feature=youtu.be Andy makes Gene laugh: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Li6xi2NbyY&feature=youtu.be&t=9m7s Pictures: http://www.electricminnowmusic.com/upload/GeneVaultPics/

  • Episode 14: Alice in Chains versus Pearl Jam featuring Matthew Clark and Ryan Brown, Pt. 2

    22/04/2018 Duration: 52min

This second half covers Alice in Chains. Ryan really did a great job of making the case and also related very personal stories about how Alice in Chains impacted him starting at the age of 14 and continuing up through the present day. He even uses the band and the songs to relate to his children's lives. Telestrion - Blazing in the Sky available now: https://telestrion1.bandcamp.com/album/blazing-in-the-sky

  • Episode 14: Alice in Chains versus Pearl Jam featuring Matthew Clark and Ryan Brown, Pt. 1

    21/04/2018 Duration: 01h14min

We don't waste much time in this one on the intro before getting right in to it with not one but two guests and both of them were advocating for separate sides of the question. It was such a good conversation that it went over two hours so this is part one and covers just the Pearl Jam portion. Samford's band Telestrion's new is available here: https://telestrion1.bandcamp.com/album/blazing-in-the-sky

  • Episode 13: Public Enemy versus N.W.A. with Manny Trillo

    12/04/2018 Duration: 01h12min

We start out talking about Manny's thoughts on Manchester United and Liverpool before getting in to how he became an un-ironic and self-aware fan of ICP. All of us come down firmly on the side of Public Enemy throughout before I confess at the end to shooting Phil Collins in the face and I have no regrets.

  • Episode Twelve: Bad Music Appreciation

    06/04/2018 Duration: 01h38min

The two Andy's talk baseball before turning our attention to some of the worst music in the world. The Gormley: www.youtube.com/watch?v=87nkJquHnAU This is "Baby Lu-Lu": http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GUwZaMHsZ3A/UHt5P91-5pI/AAAAAAAAFQI/QzMoEHzSAQs/s640/BabyLuLu-album-cover-WTF-bad-album-covers.jpg

  • Episode Eleven: Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin

    30/03/2018 Duration: 01h07min

This episode goes to eleven. We started out talking about how politics is always against you and then on the back half Andy Samford delivered a very righteous case for why Black Sabbath is actually a great band and I'm inclined to agree. One of our better episodes, I have to say,

  • Episode Ten: David Bowie versus Bob Dylan

    16/03/2018 Duration: 01h05min

The Andys discuss two of the best singer/songwriters of all time. Bowie/Bing Crosby: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9kfdEyV3RQ

  • Episode 9: Prince vs. Michael Jackson

    06/03/2018 Duration: 01h05min

Thanks to Boyz II Men we found enough inspiration to overcome our differences and keep the pod going. Andy saw Noel Gallagher in concert this week so we started out talking about that before moving on to a crazy political story. We finished it off by obviously picking Prince over MJ. Duh.

  • Episode 8: Sex Pistols versus The Clash

    27/02/2018 Duration: 01h09min

The Andy's talk about a couple movies before reaching a point of no return. Possibly the final episode of this young podcast. Links: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89OP78l9oF0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZLhqTzjpUM

  • Episode Seven: The Flaming Lips vs. Pink Floyd featuring Scott Jeffries, Pt. Two

    22/02/2018 Duration: 58min

We finish the conversation by discussing the career trajectory of one of the best and most important rock bands of all time.

  • Episode Seven: The Flaming Lips vs. Pink Floyd featuring Scott Jeffries, Pt. One

    21/02/2018 Duration: 01h03min

We sped through the intro here because we knew it was going to be a stem winder. Little did we know that the minimal intro and discussion of the Flaming Lips would take up a full hour and the Floyd conversation was another hour on top of that. This is the first half. • Episode Six: Nirvana and Pixies

    17/02/2018 Duration: 01h18min

The Andy's start out discussing the Quincy Jones GQ interview before quickly discussing their album picks of the week. They then move on to dispensing with Pixies and then use the remaining time to fellate Nirvana and their influence, positive and negative, on pop music before somehow drifting in to radical left politics.
