  • № 5 · Aaron Draplin

    18/06/2018 Duration: 32min

t the backyard of Haus der Kulturen der Welt, where TYPO Berlin 2018 took place, I talked with the Portland-based graphic design juggernaut Aaron Draplin. Being known for his work for clients like Nike, Ford, Barack Obama, I particularly like his huge number of self-commissioned projects like the Space Shuttle poster series and the Field Notes, as well as his speaking fiascos. Just like his famous talks, we covered many topics: his book, finding energy, what makes for a great presentation, working as a full-time employee vs on your own, paying taxes, slowing down, supporting friends, the Space Shuttle and Sojus rockets, his design approach, his relationship to the Futura typeface, handling too many emails, self-publishing your book, and much more. We also introduce Umlaut the dog.

  • № 4 · Elliot Jay Stocks

    04/04/2018 Duration: 38min

Welcome to another conversation I had with a remarkable creative. Last Summer, I met designer Elliot Jay Stocks, who has worked for clients including Microsoft, Virgin, EMI, MailChimp, and Campaign Monitor. He is also an electronic musician who records under the name of Other Form, as well as a speaker and design author. His current job is co-founder and Creative Director of the lifestyle magazine Lagom. He is probably most known for being the founder of another magazine though, the bi-annual printed typography magazine (and soon-to-be book) 8 Faces. Elliot also used to work as Adobe Typekit’s Creative Director. So of course we talked a lot about type and typography, but also about working for Adobe, as well as working with your partner, turning a magazine into a book, and releasing a record. Please check the shownotes on www.creative.fm for links to his many projects.

  • № 3 · Karen McManus

    06/03/2018 Duration: 39min

Welcome to the third edition of Creative FM, the brand new, independent, and free Creative Makers podcast. In this podcast I speak to designers, makers, and interesting brain-workers from across the world to hear their stories and discuss creativity. This time, I met Karen McManus who is the Senior Director of Revenue Marketing at a company that provides design assets and technology that help create brands. Although being a single parent, she somehow manages to writes Young Adult contemporary and fantasy fiction books in her spare time. As if this wasn’t enough, her recent book ‘One Of Us Is Lying’ became an instant New York Times and international bestseller. The book has been on the list for over 30 weeks already and available in 35 territories worldwide. Last but not least, the book is currently being developed as a TV series. I have read it myself and—although many would say I am not a Young Adult anymore—I liked it a lot. Hence I had to find out about the secret of writing a bestseller in your free time.

    05/03/2018 Duration: 37min

In the second episode of Creative FM—the creative leaders podcast with Ivo Gabrowitsch—I had the pleasure to meet the one and only Debbie Millman. Debbie is a designer and brand expert who has worked with some of the biggest clients, she is an author, a teacher, a former president of the AIGA, as well as a podcaster. The born New Yorker has an incredible vita, but is probably best known for the Design Matters podcast which she runs for 13 years already! In the interview, we talk about Manhattan, failures, refusing once-in-lifetime opportunities, Design Matters and much more. We also talked briefly about Print Magazine, where Debbie was editorial and creative director until the magazine has suspended publication just a few weeks ago. At the end, I am asking her about her 10 year plan strategy for a remarkable life. This strategy could change your life.
