Whistling Rufus (TOTW)
16/04/2024A Tune of the Week written in the late 1800's, considered a ragtime or tin pan alley tune. It's a tough one to play, especially having just learned it today, but it was also an unusual tune to figure out.

Scully's Reel/Sail Away
10/04/2024What I worked out in gEADE tuning for playing clawhammer with piano at a contra dance. (it's for a dancing, so it's fairly long) From a couple of years ago, first dance from long break of Covid. Was a bit rough.
-
Horses in the Canebreak
10/04/2024Playing around with gDGDE tuning. Also experimenting using BandLab app and some of built in fx and processing for mastering... to demo what it does (it is a bit much)
-
Winderslide
10/04/2024This was an experiment using iPhone and BandLab app for quick multitrack in kitchen.

Last of Sizemore (Hiram Stamper)(TOTW)
05/04/2024Old Kentucky crooked fiddle tunes are intriguing and Hiram Stamper is an authentic learning resource in my book. Bruce Greene recorded this one and it was tricky to arrange. I got some help listening to George Jackson, the New Zealander old-time player that's a pleasure to hear.

Old Abbott (TOTW)
29/03/2024From the playing of an Alabama fiddler, Paisley Hagood. Mostly he plays ABAB, which is kind of a treat after always playing AABBAABB. The high note in the A part gives it an ancient tone feeling for me.
-
Home Sweet Home (2 banjos)
29/03/2024I found this on a tape I thought I'd lost. It's a twin-banjo version of 'Home Sweet Home', recorded in 1978 with two cassette players! Just the once through.
-
North Carolina Breakdown
28/03/2024Played in 3 finger bluegrass style. Key of G. Played on a 1930's vintage 10 3/4 Slingerland open back pot fitted with a new 5 string neck.

Rita Waltz
23/03/2024Slow Melody in 3/4 time from the year 1924. Edited by Rob MacKillop. I find that melody good for playing and learning with accents.
-
Swallow Tail Jig
23/03/2024It's rare to work on a jig with clawhammer. This is a sweet tune with a real Irish (to my ears) melody. Its minor tones make it a bit bittersweet.

Cannonball Blues
17/03/2024Based on the playing of the Leslie Riddle and the Carter Family, the melody resembles White House Blues, an earlier song, and is included in a Tune of the Week featuring the latter. This recording was made when my husband, Kit, and I were performing locally at events focusing on local history. We liked choosing old-time tunes and songs and have a informal front porch sound. Plinky & Plunky with our mandolin and banjo played a lot together until Kit's stroke.
