  • 107. Tier 1 Leaders | Colton and Mackey Live Interview

    11/05/2018 Duration: 16min

Mackey and Colton are live in our newest episode of Coach 360 talking about Colonel Craig Flower's idea of tier 1 leadership. Mackey shares the three questions that get asked of these tier 1 leaders: 1. Can they do it? 2. Will they do it? 3. Will others follow them when they do? So many times we believe that in order to be the best leader, you have to be the best player on the field, and if you were the best player, then by default, you were the best leader. In the book, "The Captains Class" Sam Walker unveils that after investigating all the seventeen sports dynasties from the past, the best leaders were not necessarily the best players, they were the glue that held the team together. They were capable, willing, and others followed them. The best leaders aren't necessarily the best players or the best motivators, they are the players who can do a little bit of it all the best. Mackey and Colton go on to talk about ways in which coaches can develop their players in certain areas they are lacking to create tie

He talked about the shift from thinking solely about winning and records to focusing on using basketball as a facilitator for his ministry of creating a sense of confidence and character in his athletes. Coach shares his coaching philosophy and the idea that being a successful coach means lighting a fire within each player, not lighting a fire beneath them. He also gives practical ways how coaches can navigate a shifting mentality from focusing on records to focusing on lives.

  • 104. Be Of Good Character | Live at the Leadership Summit

    04/05/2018 Duration: 04min

In our latest episode, Mackey is live at the Leadership Summit encouraging coaches and leaders to be of good character. Mackey talks about how we can put rings on a finger and records on a wall, but all of those things are temporary and can be taken away at any given moment, but the one thing that cannot be taken away is your character. As you help raise up the next generation, recognize that they will not learn from words on a paper or bold words painted in the locker room. They will learn from the quiet actions of your life. Winning is a by product of being successful. When you commit to being successful in the little things, success in your life and in who you are, others will see that and that will begin to shape who they are. Simply talking about it isn't enough, our actions must follow. If we are different in private than we are in public, one day we will be exposed. Your private life will always become your public life.

In our latest episode, Mackey is live at the Leadership Summit encouraging coaches and leaders to stand firm in what they do and who they are. Mackey talks about how easy it is being so close to the end of the year to want to coast and quit continually pursuing excellence in everything you do. If you are at that place in the year, at the place in your life when you want to give up and quit, stand firm. Everyone has been in a place where your mind wants to tell you to keep at it and your heart wonders whether it's worth it or not. Mackey takes us through a similar battle he experienced in high school. He did everything right, he was bigger, faster, stronger than everyone else. He was in extracurriculars and had good grades, he did everything in his power to do what was right. Mackey gets a call from a college coach, all his dreams were coming true, and in the first play, playing in front of those coaches for the first time, he injured his knee, his dreams and goals seemed to slip through the very hand he thoug

  • 98. Hope During the Hurricane | Jason Herring | Refugio ISD

    18/04/2018 Duration: 35min

In our latest episode, Colton is live with Coach Herring of Refugio ISD. Coach talks about the importance of not allowing circumstances to affect your performance, and shares the devastation that Hurricane Harvey had on his town. He talks about putting himself aside and being more than a coach for the athletes by sleeping in cots with them when their home was destroyed, beginning football early to keep them focused on something other than their hurt, and continually being a support system throughout the rebuilding process. Coach goes on to talk about the fact that as coaches, they were going to allow the athletes to use Harvey as an excuse to not give their best each and every day. The way they had to go about discipline and enforcing rules looked a little different than normal because Coach ensured each athlete put his family first, but his expectations of every single one of them stayed the same. Because of the coaching staff's attitude, the athletes were given a sense of hope during a time when most of the

  • 97. A Coach, an Athlete, and a Parent Walk Into an Assembly | Live at Anderson High School

    16/04/2018 Duration: 09min

In our latest episode, Mackey is live at Anderson HS in what he says was one of the most electric places he's ever spoken at. Mackey emphasizes that what we learn in sports will translate to the rest of our life. We learn things like integrity, doing the right things because they're the right things to do, and we don't fear the consequence of doing so. We live in a world where people stay quiet because they are afraid of the consequences of doing what's right. What we learn in sports is that there is POWER in standing up for the person on your right and on your left. You makes sacrifices for one another so you can come together as one and stand up for one another. We learn about commitment and attitude and how to respond to situations through sports. There is not a person in the world more powerful than you. You are the most powerful person in the world because no one can make you have a bad attitude. There's not a person in the world that can control your effort but you. You cannot control the cards you've b

  • 96. Love YOU Too Much | Live with Mackey

    13/04/2018 Duration: 11min

In our latest #Coach360 episode, Mackey (@mackeyspeaks) is fired up about a recent quote he posted on Twitter talking about the idea that the very best coaches care too much about their players to not let them be their best. The smallest things matter to the coaches that won't accept anything except each players' best. The best coaches accept nothing but the very best. They see in them what the athletes don't always see in themselves. They know and see where athletes could go when the athletes themselves don't believe they could get there. We all have someone who we would run through a brick wall for, someone who has shaped and molded us to be the people we are today. Do you love YOURSELF enough to demand the best of you? The truth is, we're really great at loving other people and we're awful at loving ourselves. It only takes one person for doubt to be effective. The only person that has to have doubt for it to be effective is you, and the moment that you doubt yourself, you allow in the very worst language,

  • 95. Continuing the Legacy On and Off the Field | Steve Wood | Aledo High School

    11/04/2018 Duration: 18min

Coach Wood shares the importance he puts on himself to set expectations and be a model of his own expectations within his program. Athletes feed off of their coach's attitude, so having a solid group of men around them, not just men who are good at the X's and O's, but genuinely good hearted men, help create a character building culture within the team. Coach goes on to talk about the importance he places on athletes valuing and respecting their differences and how the differences that set them apart. It all starts with the coaches, having that tight knit group of men, impacting and influencing the next generation of young men.

  • 94. Average Up | Live at Wills Point and Grand Saline FCA

    09/04/2018 Duration: 09min

In our latest episode, Mackey is live at Wills Point and Grand Saline. Sometimes as leaders we think that we have to have all of the right answers, that we have to be without blemish, but the reality is that the mark of a good leader is not one who is above correction, but one who embraces it. There are twi different types of discipline: discipline of structure and discipline of correction. Discipline of structure is when you order your life to know what you say yes to and what to say no to. Discipline of correction says that when I make a mistakes, I'm going to own it. You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. If we want to become leaders, we must surround ourselves with people that make us better. Not only to do you have to surround yourself with people that make you better, but you have to make other people better! You have to ask, "how can I make you better?" Don't exploit, don't leach on other people. People like to put humility up as a token trait. They're quick to praise it,

  • 93. One Team: A Report From the Road with Mackey

    06/04/2018 Duration: 09min

We have a special new #Coach360 episode as Mackey joins us live from the road. Mackey talks about the powerful time he spent at Anderson HS and how he was jamming with a coach about the idea of being one team. It's so easy to believe we are one with our basketball or softball team, or with whichever team we are a part of, but it's rare for teams to has this "one team" mentality with regarding an entire athletic department. When every athlete comes together, there's a different energy surrounding them because every athlete is driven and has goals, and to point all of that focus towards the idea that you are all of the same, but you are different. Athletes are the most influential students in the school building. By joining together, athletes will realize how much of an impact they can and will make, not just in sports, but through sports. • 91. Anger & Wisdom | Live at Wills Point and Grand Saline

    02/04/2018 Duration: 10min

In our latest episode, Mackey is live at Wills Point and Grand Saline talking about the different ways to be a leader worth following. Mackey emphasizes that to be a leader worth following, you must be slow to anger or be long tempered. Being slow to anger doesn't mean we never get angry, being slow to anger means catching ourselves and thinking twice before we are about to blow up. We pause before to stop the storm. You have to ask, "what will my anger accomplish in this moment?" A good leader always has a purpose for what they do. A good leader buys wisdom. Wisdom is something to be pursued. Wisdom is something to be purchased, and when you buy something, you do it with intentionality. Mackey challenges us to seek wisdom, in whatever way you believe you can, read your Bible, read a book. Continually seek out wisdom by talking with others, listening to podcasts, or reading a book.

  • 90. Big Time Is Where You Are | Colton and Mackey Live Interview

    30/03/2018 Duration: 11min

In our latest Mackey and Colton are live talking about how to make where you are the big time. Mackey talks about the idea that as coaches, we can easily look for the next big play, get prepared for our next move, when in reality, we need to make where we are big time. Where you are has got to be the big time for you. If you can't make where you are big time then you probably shouldn't be there and the next place you go probably won't be big time either because "big time" has little to do with the stature of the program, but has a whole lot to do with what you bring to the program. In so many areas of our lives, it's easy to think the grass is always greener on the other side, whether that be in work, school, life, or sports. If you are not willing to put in the work today and grow where your feet are planted, then you aren't going to reach that goal tomorrow.

  • 89. Challenge the Limit | Joe Hubbard | East Central High School

    28/03/2018 Duration: 18min

In our latest episode, Colton is live with Coach Joe Hubbard of East Central High School talking about the importance of focusing on building relationships with athletes in your program. Coach explains how the initial goal he has as new players join the team is to invest time and love into each athlete. Another mentality that they focus on is becoming the best they can be, whether that be in the classroom, at home, or in school, they continually instill the "work hard, play hard" mentality. Coach Hubbard challenges and raises the level for each of his players to see how they respond to a challenge with the hope of creating good habits and a powerful work ethic in life. Coach continues to communicate the idea that as athletes, as coaches, as parents, we cannot change the hand we've been dealt in life, but we can control the way we play them.

  • 88. Discipline and Pride | Wimberley HS Football

    26/03/2018 Duration: 08min

In our latest episode, Mackey is live at Wimberley High School talking discipline and pride. Mackey stresses that whatever your goals and dreams are, both in sports and in life, they require discipline. Those goals are going to require that you say "no" to some things that everybody else gets to say "yes" to. Some of you will have to sacrifice what you do on the weekends and who your friends are to reach your goals and dreams. There's going to be something in you that thinks it's not fair to have to say "no" when others say "yes", but you will realize that your hard work, your dedication, and your goals and dreams are bigger than theirs are. The cost of your goals and dreams are higher than theirs are. Success is always expensive and its currency is sacrifice. The difference between where you are and where you want to be is your pride. There are two types of pride. There's the pride that says, "I'm gonna prove that I'm right without the evidence, the pride that can never be coached. You can tell how successfu
