Power Session #59: "Bonding with Children" with my Parents
28/03/2018 Duration: 55minIn this 6th Episode of Power Your Life Today Season 3: #ParentingPower, I was able to discuss with my parents the ideas behind bonding with children and parent relationships. In this episode, my parents and I discuss: How kids are like cows and will always "push the fence." Connecting with kids emotionally and helping them feel bonded. How you don't need to have money to do meaningful things for kids or spouses. How Dad was able to do endearing things with kids after work. How Father's Interviews helped us connect with Dad on a monthly (or so) basis. The lessons the kids taught Dad and Mom. Lessons on spirituality and how our religion has tied into all we do How to let your kids choose their own path in life and not force them into things My favorite quote from Mom: "When the parents are clear on who they are, what they are about, and what they expect, the kids may kick at the fence, they may not like it, but they feel secure. My favorite quote from Dad: "Basketball was a big part of my

Power Session #58: "Respect: Be the Example" with my Parents
28/02/2018 Duration: 42minIn this 5th Episode of Power Your Life Today Season 3: #ParentingPower, I was able to discuss with my parents the specifics of how respect is taught, earned, and shown through example. The biggest takeaway I had is that as we, as adults and parents, do better at living on a higher level of respect, communication, and kindness, we teach. Respect is a learned behavior, and kids learn through observation. So, perhaps this podcast is more of a self-development journey rather than tools for how to handle Topics we discussed include: Dealing with mean, snarky behavior of teenagers How when Dad took his Medical Anatomy students (high school) to the Cadaver lab, he took all the kids' cell phones and there were no complaints. Respect is setting expectations and communicating them, which means parents need to think things through and not be nebulous Acknowledging when someone is in authority How kids can be taught to handle disagreements among themselves How our family's religious background impacts how we handl

Power Session #57: "Teenagers: The Aliens Sucked Their Brains Out" with my Parents
14/02/2018 Duration: 48minIn this 4th Episode of Power Your Life Today Season 3: #ParentingPower, I was able to discuss with my parents the nature of raising Teenagers and the complexities that come with this age group. Topics we explored together: Where the phrase "the aliens sucked their brains out" came from and how my parents felt about raising not just 7 teenagers, but MANY others as well (cousins, "adoptees,' etc.). How teenagers make decisions based on emotion, not logic and consequences The time my parents surprised me on my birthday at the high school and how I felt at the time vs. now Ways that Dad was able to interact with us kids even while being a working dad The traditions our family had, and how this helped with bonding and connection, even during chaotic teenage years. How to handle when your teenager is acting out and experimenting with things that make you upset. The art of apologizing to teenage children, seeking to understand and validate, and properly communicate without jumping to conclusions CLICK HERE TO V

01/02/2018 Duration: 50minWelcome to Session 3 of the #ParentingPower Season of Power Your Life Today! In this episode, my parents and I explore more specifics about discipline around Grounding, Timeout, Curfew, Technology, and Spanking: Questions we explored: Will you tell us about the timeout chair, what its purpose was, and some of the rules/regulations around it? Why the timeout chair is more effective than "go to your room." At what age the timeout chair was not a discipline option any longer. Younger parents are dealing with social media, phones, and advancing technology. What are some of the difficulties parents may have around technology? Why didn't you buy any of your kids (except the oldest) a car? How being the "nice parent" is doing a disservice to the child. How Dad manages technology and cell phones in his high school classroom. How to manage cell phones at dinner The Yellow Chart for curfew, time spent, and other guidelines The spoon--when and how it is used for spanking I learned the timeout chair is amazing for havi

Power Session #55: "The Art of Follow-Through" with my Parents
19/01/2018 Duration: 38minIn this 2nd episode of Power Your Life Today Season 3: #Parenting Power, I was able to discuss with my parents the following topics: What they think about teaching Follow-Through to other parents The Story of Amelia (my sister) and how I got in trouble to the same extent she did for lying in science class How painful it was when Denzel (the oldest boy) had been asked to leave the home, but then asked Dad if he could come back and how Dad had to say 'no' because Mom and he had already agreed on that. When Mom told Denzel he didn't have permission to drive the truck to school or she would call the cops. How each of us kids learned a LOT vicarious--one of the perks of being close in age with lots of siblings. Following through with young children -- when Dallin (the youngest) and his friend, Harrison, were hiding in the store and mom "left." Little ducks in a row at the store with young kids The difference between bribery and rewards Following through on vacations and trips, or fun outings--do what you

Power Session #54: "Parenting Theory vs. Reality" with my Parents
11/01/2018 Duration: 37minIn this 1st episode of Power Your Life Today Season 3: #Parenting Power, I was able to discuss with my parents the following topics: What they thought about parenting BEFORE they got married, and how that differs from what they know about parenting now. How they worked to break patterns from past generations Characteristics they have developed as parents Relationship-building techniques for strong parenting skills How to not leverage the other parent as a weapon to children How to handle derisive children and not overreact. Books and programs that have made a big difference What it felt like to become empty-nesters, and how if parents aren't careful, they can feel extremely unimportant and empty. And so much more! This first episode gave me great insight and perspective into thinking about my parents as human beings, working to do their best and be their best. I didn't have too much to say in this as my perspective was enlarged. I could see their angle of parenting in a way I never did before as

Power Session #47: "Talking To Your Inner Child" with Rene Brent
04/07/2017 Duration: 51minWhat happened to you before the age of 10 years old that is impacting your life through your emotions and behavior? With the desire to be vulnerable and trusting my listeners, I decided to let you listen to a session I did with Rene Brent, Hypnotherapist. While I didn't go into full hypnosis (as we did not want anyone listening in their car to go into trance), I was able to enter a deeper trance stage that allowed me to find some incredible healing and insight. I am letting this very raw, vulnerable real-life session (no scripting--neither of us knew what to expect!) run with little editing in the hopes that my listeners will experience insight into healing processes and just how we each DO have the power to heal and enjoy a life of happiness. Different parts of myself, the emotions involved, and what happened around the age of 8 or 9 years old that was the impetus into my heightened body awareness and perfectionism that dominated most of my life. I hope this session lands on the right ears. I hope you
