Euro tragedy: a drama in nine acts
27/06/2018 Duration: 01h40minAt this event Ashoka Mody, Visiting Professor, International Economic Policy, Princeton University, presented his new book: Euro tragedy: a drama in nine acts. Blending economic analysis with political drama, the book argues that the push for a common currency – the euro – has undermined the entire political project. It explores how missteps in Economic Policy have led to the impasse in Europe today and offers insights into the roots of Europe’s current disorder, especially distrust of the political systems and elites that seem increasingly undemocratic to the European masses.

Where is China’s financial system heading? Implications for Europe
25/05/2018 Duration: 01h43minChina’s financial system has been instrumental for China’s economic miracle as it has intermediated a massive amount of savings into an investment-led growth model. As the return on assets slows down and the aging accelerates, a key question is how ready is China’s financial system for such transformation. Given the massive Chinese banks and their increasingly large presence in the world, including Europe, and the very rapid growth of China’s bond market both onshore and offshore, this question is also extremely important for Europe.

Solving the productivity puzzle
23/05/2018 Duration: 01h28minProductivity growth matters for material living standards but has dropped to historic lows in advanced economies. The McKinsey Global Institute examined why productivity growth has been so weak in Europe and the US and looked at the potential for its growth to accelerate, especially at a time when automation and digital technologies are playing a growing role in the economy. The research, published in February 2018, reveals that half the recent slowdown in productivity growth is attributable to the waning of a 1990s IT-driven productivity boom, while the other half is attributable to financial crisis aftereffects, particularly weak demand and uncertainty. For the future, the report finds that digitization contains the promise of significant productivity boosting opportunities, but the benefits have not yet materialized at scale. This is due to adoption barriers and lag effects as well as transition costs. The research identifies productivity-boosting opportunities that could be at least 2 percent per year ov

The importance of being financially literate
16/05/2018 Duration: 01h27minBeing financially literate means having the necessary knowledge to make informed and responsible decisions about one’s own financial resources. In this event we will examine more closely how well countries do, what the risks of financial illiteracy are, and which policies help promote financial literacy effectively. Annamaria Lusardi, a professor at the George Washington University and the Academic Director of Global Financial Literacy Excellence Center, delivered the keynote speech. The rest of the panel provided valuable input on the subject from their own perspectives (banking, policy, and academia) before engaging in a discussion with the audience.
