  • Episode 34 - T.M.N.T. Burn Victims

    25/06/2014 Duration: 01h32min

This week saw the release of a new TMNT (2014) trailer... so we talk about that. But in other less upsetting news, Genndy Tartakovsky's "Popeye" (2016) CGI film has a new image associated with it and it looks great! Finally, we talk about Colin Firth dropping out as the voice of Paddington... and coin #Firf in the process. CLICK HERE to go to the full blog post & leave a comment! We have singing... we have stories... we have animation stories (this being an "animation podcast," it seemed appropriate)... what DON'T we have?! Listen as Stephen watches the World Cup and Rob & Pat try to keep him on topic. A lot of great tangents in this episode which are too numerous to put in the annotations so just... listen. And enjoy. • Episode 32 - Birthday Birthday Something Something

    12/06/2014 Duration: 01h33min

It's Rob's Birthday!! It was Pat's Birthday last week!! And I still make them talk to me about cartoons! This week, we actually start the discussion with the Angry Video Game Nerd movie, because as Indie creators ourselves we're happy when one of our own (same medium or not) breaks ground on a huge development like this. And you know what? It doesn't stop there, Signe Baumane is another Indie creator who is making her first feature length animated film, "Rocks in my Pockets" and it's got a trailer! Ari Folman is making a jump to a western screen wide release with his hybrid movie and it's got a trailer too... and "Bojack Horseman" is the first original adult animated programming on Netflix and it's got a trailer. Oh and Rocky & Bullwinkle disappoint us. But before all of that... we must sing to you one of the great 90s cartoon anthems. Behold. CLICK HERE to go to the full blog post & leave a comment! • Episode 31 - Diamond in the Mouth

    04/06/2014 Duration: 01h32min

We kicked off June with another LIVE episode of the podcast! We talked about Reading Rainbow, gushed over Mukpuddy's work, loved the "Song of the Sea" trailer, and discussed Sony VFX house Imageworks leaving the US for greener tax credit pastures of the great north in Vancouver. But not before we could talk about Godzilla and Maleficent, however... two movies on opposite ends of the spectrum in numerous ways. Thanks to everyone who showed up for the live taping and joined us in the chat room... you're all awesome! This week's title comes courtesy of Andrew Kaiko in the chat, Pat Ryan simultaneously coming up with it in the podcast, and all off Rob's weird, periodic ramblings. Oh, and we finished with some limericks and Pat serenades us with an original song after the music at the end. CLICK HERE to go to the full blog post & leave a comment! • Episode 30 - Speaking of 30...

    28/05/2014 Duration: 01h28min

This week we have listener submitted questions (!!) but not before talking about the "Big Hero 6" trailer, "Happy" the happy meal mascot, and a couple other stories. Also, what would The Rubber Onion podcast be without some weird tangents? Behold as we talk about music we don't like and discuss the merits of the Michael Bay opus, "Pain & Gain." And on a serious note, thanks to everyone who's been listening and supporting this podcast! You're awesome and really have made doing this fun and worthwhile week in and week out, through travel, tech issues, and diseases. We started with a little episode "zero," still going strong at 30 and don't intend on slowing down! We're here to stay! Insert Drake reference! • Episode 29 - QVCinderella

    22/05/2014 Duration: 01h18min

Stephen was traveling to and from the UK this week, and thus is sick and jet-lagged. We recorded this after midnight so Pat is attempting to be quiet. That leaves Rob to be the energetic & most eloquent of the three. So we talk about the Simpsons/Family Guy crossover, new "Big Hero 6" stills, and by popular demand we talk through the story behind the financial failure of "Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return." • Episode 28 - Andy Serkissmyass

    14/05/2014 Duration: 01h27min

Andy Serkis is an ass. We talk about that & the stuff he said in a recent interview but 1ST... "MIKE TYSON MYSTERIES!" This is a thing, you guys, it's going to be on Adult Swim's 2014 lineup and it sounds amazing. We also talk about the "Akira" live-action fan film trailer & Adam Sandler determined to ruin one of my favorite animated shorts from 2010, "Pixels." Rob and Stephen recorded this a day early so Pat recorded his thoughts on the stories and is dropped in randomly throughout the podcast just to confuse your brain... just listen for the bell, which heralds The Pat and says that he's near! But seriously, Andy Serkis is an ass. CLICK HERE to go to the full blog post & leave a comment! 09/05/2014 Duration: 01h46min

"The Simpsons" LEGO episode happened, DreamWorks launches a YouTube channel, and "The Flintstones" head back to the big screen! We also discuss the "TimeOut Top 100 Animated Films" list and our personal favorites. Oh and we also talk pooping... because we're adults. • Episode 26 - Can We Edit That One Out?

    30/04/2014 Duration: 02h12min

And we finally break the 2hr mark! That's right, we talk about Batman and The Simpsons -- listing off our favorite episodes and moments -- and then shift over to talking about sexism in movies and the Bechdel test again. But if that's not enough, we close out the podcast with about 30min of discussing racism (centered around a story about "The Jungle Book")... so it's a super light and breezy listen. • Episode 25 - I Do Mickey Mouse

    23/04/2014 Duration: 01h58min

Rob and Stephen talk about animation: where they got started, thoughts on where animation is going, and how to stay young & naive in a world that keeps knocking down your optimism. We were going to talk about some stories from this week, but since Pat is not with us on this episode we just ended up talking about some of the more "animator" parts of animation. Oh and let's not forget... this episode ends in violence! Not kidding. Hope all of you enjoy it and we'd love to hear what you have to say in the comments! • Episode 23 - Unrelated Vomit Stories

    10/04/2014 Duration: 01h31min

Archie's gonna die! Rob was on Comedy Central! We tell vomit stories! So many things happening. This was our second attempt at a live podcast and we had a great turnout in the chat! Everyone was suggesting names for the title of the podcast and we ultimately chose the one Ryan from Mukpuddy animation studio suggested. This is also the first time we have something unique for both those who saw the podcast live and those of you listening here... success! • Episode 22 - TMNT (2014) Trailer Talk

    02/04/2014 Duration: 01h32min

This week's podcast is all about the TMNT (2014) first trailer and how much it sucks... and why. We (meaning Stephen mostly, let's be honest) break down every incarnation of the Turtles and how things got to be where we are now, with two great incarnations and a possible disaster on the way. Also, Rob tells a sad story at the end you won't want to miss! This week, the audio was recorded off a LIVE broadcast with viewers and errrrrrrything. Fans made images, illustrations (below) and comments... it was a lot of fun! You can check the recorded video below, if you're into that sorta thing... • Episode 21 - Beefy Teenage Mutant Ninja Babies

    26/03/2014 Duration: 01h20min

This episode might have my favorite segment in it so far where we rip up eHarmony's industry-specific list "15 Reasons to Date an Animator." Rob & Stephen are flying solo this episode with Pat off fighting crime for the week... and it goes as you might guess. Character voices are created, stories are told, transitions are fumbled, innuendos are made. But first, we HAD to talk about new info about the TMNT movie coming out... because Stephen... • Episode 20 - It's a Pube, Charlie Brown

    20/03/2014 Duration: 01h43min

A bunch of the things we talk about this week were actually stories that broke just yesterday! The new Peanuts teaser trailer hit this week and impressed everyone except, predictably, Pat. Also, in the world of "what-the-what-really-are-you-serious?!"... Sofia Coppola is rumored to be directing a Live-Action "The Little Mermaid." • Episode 18 - Adele Dazeem

    05/03/2014 Duration: 01h45min

Long live Adele Dazeem!! The Oscars were this weekend so we talk about them out of mostly obligation, but the real stories are with our own Rob Yulfo and Pat Ryan coming out with brand new creative content! Rob's got a new animated short and Pat has just started a Sci-Fi radio show series (both embedded here). We also talk about painted movie posters, Bill Waterson's new "comic", the documentary on the Rhythm & Hues bankruptcy and the VFX issue as a whole. This one was recorded in one long shot and I didn't go back to remaster anything because Rob again... has computer issues. We literally recorded this 3 hours prior to me typing this. So... enjoy!! • Episode 16 - Animals Are Dumb

    21/02/2014 Duration: 01h43min

Stephen is traveling this week... but that won't stop us! The podcast continues, with a spit & glue setup only MacGyver could understand. This week we talk about Clone Wars coming to Netflix, Annie Leibovitz making our casting game come true, and Rob finds a tumblr that... well... I'll let him explain it. We also talk about a post that made its rounds this week on what it actually means to be an animator. It was short and blunt and we have words about it. This week, a friend and fellow animation geek, Jules Jammal, passed away at a well-lived but still young age of 39. There is a link to a scholarship set up in his name in the annotations below. • Episode 15 - Everything Is LEGO

    13/02/2014 Duration: 01h51min

"The LEGO Movie" blew our collective minds this weekend and we had to talk about it... a LOT! But don't worry there are absolutely NO spoilers at all in the discussion. We get into some interesting topics like metamodernism and the new comedy, selling out and how it's a crap concept, and the remix culture and understanding what the soul of a property is. Oh... and we had a WHOLE BUNCH OF TECHNICAL ISSUES! Man alive... for this being the most discussion we've ever had on any subject(s), this was a bad time to have audio go wonkey, mic problems, people cutting in and out. But ever the profession, I have edited this thing together in a Lynchian masterpiece of epic awesomesauce. If you ever leave a comment on one of our podcast episodes, this is the one to do it on. A lot going on here and we'd love to hear what you think! Oh and psst... little secret... stay for the very very end. Hashtag smiley face (that's me trying to understand young culture).
