Today is all about nostalgic movies with nods to classic paintings. Kelsey and I will do two dives into our favorites: The most classic masked killer of all time has a face inspired by one of the most classic paintings of all time. In this episode, we will discuss the two most famous screams in pop culture--one by Edvard Munch, the other by Hollywood.   In this episode, listeners will: Follow how the face from a ghastly painting became the infamous face of slasher films Grant Wood’s American Gothic is iconic and has been parodied through the ages. An iconic American coming of age tale. Ferris Bueller's Day Off was made in 1986, however, many themes still resonate today. We will be focusing on the scene in the Art Institute of Chicago. While in Bruges, Ken and Ray, the hitmen, visit the museum and contemplate life, death, and purgatory while inspecting Hieronymus Bosch's painting The Last Judgement. The Green Fairy, The Green Muse, and The Four Loko of the Victorian Era, in this batch's special, we investigate one of the world’s most misunderstood beverages, absinthe. We take a closer look at why artists and writers have been so enamored with the drink both before and after Impressionism. Claude Monet is famous for his water lily paintings which you may encounter hanging on the walls of any elementary school’s art room or in the lobby of a dentist’s office. These serene paintings are very popular, but that wasn’t always the case. Monet had a habit of painting the same people, places, and things over and over again. A piano teacher, unconfirmed paternity, and a lifetime of copying Spanish portraits--we look closely into the personal life of painter Edouard Manet. In Episode 9 of Season 2, "If the Shoe Fits," Nicole explores the vast ways and significance of shoes in art. She sheds light on identity and self portraiture through shoes, in particular, Van Gogh's. And Kelsey searches for a Macklemore song (it IS Wing$ btw y'all)

"She's A Brick (Concrete) House," Episode 8 of Season 2 illuminates Rachel Whiteread's work, House. Kelsey raves about the Lisa Saltzman book, Making Memory Matter and contemplates giving physical presence to the absent. Nicole warns against borrowing sisters' things without return and expresses the physicality of memory.

In Episode 7 of Season 2, Nicole explores the cheeky work of Piero Manzoni. Kelsey questions if artist bs is actually worth its weight in gold. And both consider boiling some more eggs.

In Episode 6 of Season 2, Kelsey expands on the elaborate symbols used in Hans Holbein's The Ambassadors and Nicole reminisces about the classic Animorph book series. 

In Season 2 Batch 1's Fifth Episode Special, Nicole and Kelsey gush over their favorite works of art. Kelsey gives a shout out to her eldest sister and Nicole expresses an affinity for a cheeky play on 1950's ideals. Artwork by Emmanuel Leutze, Joe Webb, Rene Magritte, and El Greco are discussed. Nicole tells us her about her love for religious works and Kelsey ties it all together with Magritte (of course.)

“What’s for Dinner?” Ep4S2, Nicole tackles Judy Chicacgo’s infamous and massive dinner party project. Kelsey points out the undeniable humor in the subject matter of the plates and questions the reasons for the impact of the work. Nicole wishes she were the patron saint of beer and Kelsey reveals her secret recipe for asparagus.

On Ep3S2, “ORLANdon’t!” Kelsey displeases everyone with the subject of the contemporary French artist, ORLAN’s plastic surgery performance piece. Nicole and Kelsey debate the age old stereotypes of Mary and Mary Magdalene and consider their personal opinions of the work as young female artists in the 21st century. Kelsey botches some Greek mythology, Nicole snuggles Hamlet, and we’re all pretty uncomfortable about some body-centered “carnal” artwork.

In “Pass the Salt,” Episode 2 of Season 2, Nicole takes a closer look at the famous flaking fresco, The Last Supper. Kelsey and Nicole consider the likely reality of the piece in comparison to the common conspiracy theories. Sorry folks, no Tom Hanks here!

In Episode 1 of Season 2, “Dabble in Dada,” Kelsey finally figures out the simplest idea of the readymade. She considers the implication of premade items as an art medium, Nicole still isn’t convinced with DuChamp’s work, and the cats cuddle up in heated blankets.
