Synopsis

Lit City is an Iowa Public Radio podcast that highlights some of the years best fiction and nonfiction. Episodes feature interviews with authors, commentary on their books, and glimpses into the sights, sounds, and history of Iowas literary landscape. Join us every Thursday for this ten-episode series created right here in the United States only UNESCO City of Literature.

    Like the title character of her 1933 novel Miss Bishop , Iowa-born author Bess Streeter Aldrich is finally getting the recognition she deserves. Although she wrote 14 novels and countless popular short stories, Aldrich was long forgotten... until recently, that is, when her hometown of Cedar Falls, Iowa decided to name an elementary school after her. Retrieving forgotten people and their stories is also the work of The Cities that Built the Bible , the most recent book by Robert Cargill, an archaeologist and associate professor of Judaism and Christianity at the University of Iowa.     "Spirits in many different forms" are what you can find in legendary Iowa City writers' bar Dave's Foxhead Pub -- a.k.a. "The Foxhead" -- according to Lauren Haldeman, local poet and developer of the City of Literature web app. Spirits also happen to be what Michelle Hoover is chasing after in her novel Bottomland , which was inspired by a mysterious family photograph she discovered in adulthood.

Then we'll hear from Erika Janik about her book Pistols and Petticoats: 175 Years of Lady Detectives in Fact and Fiction . One of those fictional lady detectives, Nancy Drew, was created by Iowa native Millie Benson. We'll hear more about her life and work from Julie Rubini, author of Missing Millie Benson: The Secret Case of the Nancy Drew Ghostwriter and Journalist , as well as from Carolyn Dyer, a Professor Emeritus of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Iowa who organized the first ever Nancy Drew conference.
