Good Life Central Oregon Podcast

In 2003 Victor started focusing on kids music that didn’t drive parents crazy. He soon became a leading kids artist in the U.S. with a growing international reputation for making great kids music.   His music has appeared on national television, NPR, Nick Jr and Parenting magazines as well as commercials in the U.S. and Europe. He’s received several awards including 3 Parents’ Choice Silver Awards. Victor appears on several music compilations including 4 Putumayo Kids’ releases alongside artists Leon Redbone, Dan Zanes, Elizabeth Mitchell, Eric Bibb, Seamus Eagan, Keola Beamer, Riders in the Sky and Jake Shimabukuro.   Victor was featured as an example of "lifestyle design" in the WSJ best-selling book The Four Hour Workweek by Tim Ferris and a proofreader for Derek Sivers bestselling business book Anything You Want. Victor enjoys helping people plot a course to being able to live more freely, creatively and authentically.

Kiley worked construction heading into the recession of 2008.  Naturally work didn't last long.   Lynette created a property management company and luckily was good at it.   She asked her husband if he could do anything, what would he do.   He replied, 'Shape boards'.     So they started World On Water boards that builds custom surf and SUP boards where art and style are as much a part of their soul as the experience of the ride.     In this podcast we talk about business, relationships, R & D, a twist on continuing education, man caves and of course, living the Good Life in Central Oregon.   

For me his art conjures up images of MC Escher, Japanese Block Art, Go Pro, and a quirky, yet fun sense of humor like Where’s Waldo.  It also gives a sense of serious whimsy due to its sophisticated delivery of boyhood dreams.    Adam Haynes is an artist raised in the quiet community of Camp Sherman.   He has gone on to do work for Nike, Adidas, Patagonia, ESPN, Specialized, Deschutes Brewery, and many more.  Between the diapers, paint and snowboarding, he has learned a thing or two about living the Good Life.

In this episode we talk to Doctor of Physical Therapy, Greg Zadow, who is a native Australian, former Cat 2 cyclist, outdoorsman, and family man.  He shares his insights on finding the Good Life through movement, competition, and finding balance both in physical fitness, but also in life.       And rumor has it, he got his start by wrestling crocs with his bare hands… in a purple speedo.   But, it’s just a rumor!

Jayson is a world-class paddler with first descents in Oregon, California and Colorado and has represented the US at World Championship competitions in Freestyle Kayaking, Open Canoe, and Surf Kayak.  He also became a Luthier with Breedlove guitars and now owns Bowerman Guitars, a company of one where he builds guitars, mandolins and lap steels for some of the worlds most notable musicians.  He also gives his time and talents helping teach guitar building to the Americana Project in Sisters High School as well as being a Board member of the Bend Paddle Trail Alliance.

Beth makes a living touring the nation playing music and making folks feel good.  Join us as she explains why she always plays barefoot and as I convince her that her music extends to international waters…    Buddy Beth Wood is also the first non-Central Oregon resident guest on the show.  However, she has become so integrated into some of Central Oregon’s premier events, playing the Sisters Folk Festival, hosting the Sunday Community Celebration and staffing the Americana Song Academy, that she is practically family and therefore kicks off our Friends of Central Oregon category.     Beth has been blessed with the gift of song and story and shares with us her path, her struggles and her triumphs.  She also shares how she “wrote her own story” as she broke the mold by also becoming an athlete.   Check out her music at www.bethwoodmusic.com or come see her in September when she returns to the Sisters Folk Festival (www.sistersfolkfestival.org)

Executive Director/Nordic Director Ben Husaby is a two-time Olympian in Nordic skiing with an impressive record of running and multi-sport accomplishments including winning the Bend Pole Pedal Paddle consecutively from 1999 – 2004.      Plus… he found the sweet spot in Central Oregon.

Dr. Blair Struble grew up in Bend playing volleyball at Mt View before playing volleyball and earning her undergrad at Willamette University.  She then went to OHSU for dental school followed by her orthodontic residency at UW.   Upon returning to Central Oregon, she has become one of the preeminent orthodontists in Bend.  Meanwhile she also coaches volleyball and raises two children with her husband.  She is a pursuer the Good life and she can certainly put a great smile on your face. 

Troy and Kim Meeder are husband and wife team who are authors, speakers and founders of the non-profit Crystal Peaks Youth Ranch that has rescued hundreds of horses and families from trauma and abuse.   They have experience with some of the most horrific stories one could imagine, yet they continue to work “in the trenches” to provide hope and the Good Life to those who need it the most. Troy wrote the book “Average Joe” and Kim wrote the books: “Hope Rising”, Bridge Called Hope”, “Blind Hope” and “Fierce Beauty”.  

Tim Neville travels the world living the magazine dream, AND gets paid to do it.   As a polyglot, polymath and poly-passionate person, he is an award winning freelance writer who frequently writes for Outside Magazine, The New York Times among others.  This Central Oregonian has a unique perspective on adventure, risk and reward and knows how to tell a good story. 

GLCO 15 ~ Life after retirement… filled with fitness, adventure and multiple world records with Tom Landis     A conversation with 71 year old bad ass swimmer, surfer and backpacker, and Central Oregonian Tom Landis.  We discuss, among other things,  reigniting the competitive drive and reaching a high level of fitness and competition and finding motivation... all beginning after retirement at age 59.

Rose is a notable chef in Bend having trained under top pastry chefs as well as in Europe.  She worked at Broken Top as pastry chef and culinary queen for many Bend publications after moving to Central Oregon. She then started her own lunch catering service called 12:00 O’clock Tart.  She is a world traveler, a teacher, a board member for Family Access Network, an entrepreneur as well as being a wife and a mom.   But her story began very, very differently. 

Sisters School District Superintendent Jim Golden shares his stories of being a young hooligan, LA gangs, and what it takes to turn the toughest kids to teach into amazing students.   He also shares lessons and insight he has learned in his long career educating these students with parents, teachers, and of course, us.

After 18 years as a pediatrician, Dr. Rick Cuddihy, departed down the road less traveled and began practicing entrepreneurial medicine helping physicians with the toughest task they perform… communicating effectively with their patients.  Pediatrician and entrepreneur, Dr. Rick Cuddihy talks to us about medicine, passion, risk, cycling, problems and solutions with healthcare and his take on the Good Life in Central Oregon.
