The future of Europe hangs in the balance as the ongoing economic and financial crisis has put the European project under more pressure than ever before. But for me this is not a time for accusations and recriminations, especially against Germany, but for cooperation and solidarity as we try to find shared solutions to our common problems.

In September 2012, the Commission put forward proposals that would for the first time give EU-wide legal status to European political parties and their respective foundations. This week saw the first formal trialogue between the Commission, which I had the pleasure to represent, the European Parliament and the Council, represented by the Irish Presidency. The aim of the proposals is to help create truly transnational European political parties and foundations and generate Europe-wide public debates ahead of next year's European Parliament elections.

ECI Week (8-14 April) was the opportunity to raise awareness about the European Citizens' Initiative via the European Commission's social media platforms. The week, timed to coincide with the first anniversary of the ECI, also included a conference hosted by the European Economic and Social Committee on what conclusions can be drawn from the first twelve months of the EU's experiment with participatory democracy, as well as a Twitter chat with Vice-President Šefčovič (catch up here via the Storify: http://storify.com/EU_Commission/eci-chat-with-vice-president-maros-sefcovic)
