Synopsis

A movie podcast that's late... but still too early.

Episodes

  • 1992 at the Movies: BASIC INSTINCT

    13/04/2022 Duration: 37min

Thirty years of back and to the left with Sharon Stone sitting and smirking. The above declaration of celebrating an iconic cinematic moment is a bit misleading as this episode is mainly about Michael Douglas and his lack of body hair. Erotic. • 1992 at the Movies: MY COUSIN VINNY

    09/04/2022 Duration: 34min

Thirty years of hating the short men that love Marisa Tomei. Aunt May deserved better. She also deserved better than currently being known as "hot Aunt May" but at least she won an Oscar along the way for MY COUSIN VINNY. As for us we present no evidence of Joe Pesci's length or girth but we have our suspicions to keep us warm at night. As for you, dear listener... somehow you have found yourself listening to another episode of SOBER CINEMA. Where did your life take a turn? • 1992 at the Movies: THE LAWNMOWER MAN

    07/04/2022 Duration: 37min

Thirty years of Pierce Brosnan inviting street urchins over to play with his flight simulator. Yeah we also had a hard time believing any of this. BUT... it was THE MATRIX of the early 90s. Which is to say that even as kids we were more amazed by the technological breakthrough of EARTHWORM JIM. And now as old men... the charms of THE LAWNMOWER MAN lead to the inevitable talk of how much better FORREST GUMP'S life turned out by having a buddy invest his money in Apple. Thanks for nothing whatever your character's name is in this, Pierce Brosnan. • 1992 at the Moves: SHAKES THE CLOWN

    06/04/2022 Duration: 35min

Thirty years of America feeling the same way as Jerry Seinfeld about Bobcat Goldthwait. SHAKES THE CLOWN presented what we presumed to be a can't miss viable piece of cinema for a gap week in 1992 because it presented one thing we hate (clowns) with one thing we love (alcoholism) and by the end of the episode we may have found a cure for alcoholics. Watch this movie. Enjoy! Or Don't! Presented by Pop Culture Case Study. • 1992 at the Movies: RADIO FLYER

    04/04/2022 Duration: 29min

Thirty years of a turtle taking a doomed ride with a maniac kid. But at least the dog makes it out okay(ish) in Richard Donner's misguided family film that doesn't quite capture the magic of say a Dwight Yoakam in SLING BLADE domestic abuse drama. It's just not that fun! Even with attempting to feed a turd to a now retired actor and professional Twitter troll in Adam Baldwin... young Frodo just can't make it work. So the boy from JURASSIC PARK must die. Enjoy! • 1992 at the Movies: WAYNE'S WORLD

    03/04/2022 Duration: 30min

Thirty years of "comedy" from Canada. We are not amused by Wayne. We are not amused by Garth. We do not suffer fools hosting their own talk show and thrusting it out to an unwelcoming world. We do however like this Rob Lowe fellow and how he handles pizza night. Enjoy! • 1992 at the Movies: FINAL ANALYSIS

    02/04/2022

Thirty years of respecting Richard Gere's hair and all the places that hair went. On this show one host looks a gift horse in the mouth that is the masterpiece FINAL ANALYSIS and tries to bring Brad Miller to a Shaq fight when it comes to one of the greatest blondes of cinema: Kim Basinger. But not just any Basinger... boozy Basinger who manages to inspire a man to have enough courage to trash talk Eric Roberts in a men's restroom. And Uma Thurman as the younger sister. Movies were once a places solely for the gods. Enjoy. • 1992 at the Movies: SHINING THROUGH

    17/03/2022 Duration: 41min

Thirty years of enjoying the legacy of great genes that is Melanie Griffith's family. Also there are some Nazis to be dealt with in SHINING THROUGH but as long as they look like Joely Richardson and are up for a cat fight... we think we can handle it in these trying political times. But back in 1992 Michael Douglas was healthy and willing to get down in the mucky muck, Liam Neeson was but a simple confused Nazi instead of confusing them heroically and a friend of ours would have said Tippi Hedren was the way to go. Dakota Johnson is the right answer but you already knew that. Enjoy! • 1992 at the Movies: LOVE CRIMES

    04/03/2022 Duration: 47min

Thirty years of not knowing what we would had in the heyday of erotic thrillers. Although it must be said that our mileage varies on just how erotic we find the wet work and horse role-play of Sean Young and That Creep From SLEEPING WITH THE ENEMY. Along the way we discover some things about ourselves: One host actually takes it as a compliment to be compared in looks to That Creep from SLEEPING WITH THE ENEMY. Another host still carries some psychological trauma from attempting to date the students of a "horse college." And finally the last host (the author of these show notes means that in every sense of the word) remains frightened of the smell of pubic hair. Enjoy! • 1992 at the Movies: JUICE

    06/02/2022 Duration: 31min

Thirty years ago NOW That's What I Call Hip-Hop was born. And if you think that is cruel wait until you see the scam that tiny Tupac Shakur and friends pull on a comely young lass working at the local record store. If you want to hear what one host was listening to as he touched his first butt (while trying to grab something else) then this is the podcast for you. And only that specific person. For we are white. And we are talking Ernest R. Dickerson's JUICE. • 1992 at the Movies: THE HAND THAT ROCKS THE CRADLE

    05/02/2022 Duration: 41min

Thirty years of white women having no reason or accountability. That may be a bit harsh but one host truly thinks that Julianne Moore deserved better. Not her character in Curtis Hanson's THE HAND THAT ROCKS THE CRADLE... just Ms. Moore in general. She's great. As well as AS GOOD AS IT GETS. The movie we are discussing is not. But it does give another host the opportunity to air out his grievances as the president of his homeowner's association while also lamenting his useless knowledge of hip hop on a movie podcast that is riveted by the glory of white women Karens as personified here by Rebecca De Mornay. She seems nice. We also all hate children. Even the father on this podcast. Enjoy! • 1992 at the Movies Begins with KUFFS

    24/01/2022 Duration: 28min

Thirty years of confusion about how one becomes an officer of the law in the Bay Area. And this film starring early 90s It Girl Milla Jovovich does nothing to illuminate us on civilianauxiliary police (but thank you Wikipedia for the hyperlink!) so we resort to our kickoff of 1992 in film by attacking each other. Being noble historians of cinema is stressful work but we hope you enjoy another season of SOBER CINEMA! • 1996 at the Movies Ends with MICHAEL

    15/01/2022 Duration: 54min

Twenty-five years of Andie MacDowell singing about pie. As disgusted as we are with the auteur behind YOU'VE GOT MAIL in this Christmas release from 1996 we still take the time to discuss the important things. Like Joey Lauren Adams' voice. Or Bob Hoskins as Wolverine. And of course... a look back at our weekly selections at the movies of 1996. Spoiler alert: it ends up being a battle between the obvious choices of HEAVEN'S PRISONERS and CHAIN REACTION. Onto the year of cinema in 1992 in 2022! • 1996 at the Movies: SCREAM

    14/01/2022 Duration: 30min

Twenty-five years of questioning the viability of Rose McGowan escaping through the garage door. For science. You will never hear a forty-something year old man talk more about Skeet Ulrich than on this podcast. Terrifying. Happy Scream Day! • 1996 at the Movies: JERRY MAGUIRE

    14/01/2022 Duration: 40min

Twenty-five years of Jay Mohr ever so briefly having power over Tom Cruise. When one thinks of the Cameron Crowe classic JERRY MAGUIRE... the infamous VALLEY OF THE DOLLS does not come to mind. Except on SOBER CINEMA. Yes, yes, we pay all proper respects to what is likely our most enjoyable watch of 1996... but it stills comes down to boobs. As it always would. Enjoy. • 1996 at the Movies: EVERYONE SAYS I LOVE YOU

    13/01/2022 Duration: 39min

Twenty-five years of listening to actors who can't sing do just that. But that's not really the problem here. It's two Kentucky hillbillies and the International Man of Mystery from Peru trying to understand the plight of the wealthy whites as often seen in Mr. Allen's filmography. Also the underage women (hello Ms. Natalie Portman) that are usually involved in the Woodmeister's films. Dangerous territory. But we are brave enough to tackle such things and also yet again mention the greatness of Nick Nolte in A WALK IN THE WOODS. You're welcome, Film Twitter. • 1996 at the Movies: THE CRUCIBLE

    13/01/2022 Duration: 34min

Twenty-five years of Daniel Day-Lewis yelling. Joan Allen puts up with a lot in this flick. The lack of adequate dental care. A husband with a wandering eye. A young up and comer smearing her face with chicken blood and placing curses on you. And then... not even welcome at church. It's a party in THE CRUCIBLE. Enjoy. • 1996 at the Movies: SLING BLADE

    13/01/2022 Duration: 44min

Twenty-five years of waking up to the roommate from the garage holding a hammer over your bed. In what is our most important episode of 1996 we discuss the many merits of Billy Bob Thornton's SLING BLADE: Was John Ritter's version of the hight and tight a bold move in mid 90s Arkansas? Dwight Yoakam's drunk boyfriend is a man of many moods when imbibing. He contains multitudes. How many weeks old are the underwear that Robert Duvall wears in his silent confrontation from his command post of the recliner? It is most assuredly our greatest episode ever. Enjoy! • 1996 at the Movies: THE MIRROR HAS TWO FACES

    12/01/2022 Duration: 33min

Twenty-five years of Barbara Streisand not being Michelle Pfeiffer. And that's just fine with two thirds of the hosts on this podcast. Rita Kempley of The Washington Post... well she had some harsh words for The Barbara. No matter. We can't all be Catwoman and in this film that's not what Mr. Bridges wants in a romantic partner. This opens the door for your hosts to try and figure out what exactly they want in a partner. If that partner happened to be Ms. Streisand. We come to no conclusions. Enjoy! Listen: Apple Podcasts/Spotify/Amazon Music/Google Podcasts Facebook/Instagram/Twitter: @sobercinema Follow your hosts on Letterboxd for sneak peaks at film criticism GENIUS: Jairo @truebromance Jared @jgdotson Josh @SoberCinema Mike @projectingfilm Find out more at https://sobercinema.pinecast.co This podcast is powered by Pinecast.

  • 1996 at the Movies: RANSOM

    11/01/2022 Duration: 34min

Twenty-five years of Lieutenant Dan hating Nick Nolte's kid. Delroy Lindo returns to the podcast from his rousing performance in FEELING MINNESOTA to once again be the voice of reason. Unfortunately he is trying to coach Mel Gibson... who has his own hangups. BUT as a movie podcast that hates children and mostly tolerates the films we select, a story about a father seeing a chance to not lose millions of dollars while ALSO losing his child? Intriguing. Enjoy! Listen: Apple Podcasts/Spotify/Amazon Music/Google Podcasts Facebook/Instagram/Twitter: @sobercinema Follow your hosts on Letterboxd for sneak peaks at film criticism GENIUS: Jairo @truebromance Jared @jgdotson Josh @SoberCinema Mike @projectingfilm Find out more at https://sobercinema.pinecast.co This podcast is powered by Pinecast.
