Synopsis

Yeardley Smith and Zibby Allen host this frank, unfiltered true crime podcast with Small Town Detectives and identical twins, Dan and Dave. Dan investigates Violent Crimes. Dave investigates Sex Crimes and Child Abuse. Often peppered with primary resources such as 9-1-1 calls and suspect interrogation recordings, each episode introduces a new crime, and is told by the detectives who investigated it. But Yeardley and Zibby dont just settle for the who, why, how and where of it all, they also seek to uncover the human side of their guests, offering a glimpse into the raw reality of true crime in Small Town, USA. Names, locations, and certain details have been altered to protect the privacy of the victims and their families.

    A mother gets home to find her infant Mariah’s head lolling from side to side when she holds her in her arms. The mother asks Mariah’s father, who had been looking after the baby, "What happened?!" He says he doesn’t know and that the child was fine when he put her to sleep. The parents rush Mariah to the hospital and, when the doctors examine her, they immediately call the police to investigate. Special Guest: Detective DavidWhen retired Detective David started out in law enforcement in 2002, his agency was so small they doubled as both police officers and firefighters, carrying their dual-purpose gear in the trunk of their patrol cars. After three years of doing double duty, David was promoted to detective. He has also served as a Patrol Sergeant and was elected Under Sheriff of his county in 2011. In 2013, David transferred back to detectives and finished out his career as an investigator for the District Attorney’s Office, until he retired in 2018. He started out as a patrol officer and in 2005 he was promoted to detective. The jurisdiction he served was so small he was often the only detective at his agency. They figure out who the victim is and then find her boyfriend, who happens to be in jail for a separate assault. Despite thin resources, detectives begin to build a case.Special Guest:  Det.     Chris’s house is burglarized while he’s at a music festival. When police arrive they see that his outdoor security camera lines have been cut. Turns out the crime was committed by his former roommate because Chris stole his former roommate’s girlfriend. We later find out that the suspect is also wanted in conjunction with a home invasion where his DNA ends up at the scene of the crime because he got hit in the head with the muzzle-end of a shotgun and it took out a chunk of his skull. Guest:  Det. DanDan was formerly a K9 handler and Violent Crimes detective at the same Small Town police department as his brother. Dan regards his years as a K9 handler to be the most rewarding of his career. He was released after going through Oregon’s “Second Look” process, which required him to show he had taken responsibility for his crime and demonstrated "outstanding reformation." He now advocates for criminal justice reform with a special focus on youth, who he argues are more likely to reform and deserve meaningful opportunities when released. Robert Detective Robert has been in law enforcement for over 18 years. He spent nine years on patrol, where he served as a field-training officer (FTO) and an FBI-trained hostage negotiator. He was subsequently promoted to corporal and later to detective. As a new detective, he worked in the crimes against children unit, which investigates sex crimes, serious physical abuse and child homicides. He was later re-assigned to the violent crimes unit, where he continues to serve.
