Salinas Underground

In this episode we return to the lair to record a late night episode. We talk about our Indian food experience at Avatar, a restaurant everyone in Salinas needs to experience. Oz talks about his experience at the Earthquakes game and why the longest outdoor bar in North America is the best place to watch soccer in the U.S. Also a story of a crazy 12 hours of drinking, food, and bruschetta, all in downtown Salinas.

This episode our guest is April King from the SPCA of Monterey County. April is the community outreach coordinator, you probably have heard her on 104.3 The Hippo or Sundays on KSBW. She didn't bring any animals this time, but she teaches us all about the SPCA and their various local programs the offer. She also explains how each SPCA branch is individually operated and run strictly on donations from the community. If you ever had any questions about the SPCA or how to get involved this is the episode to listen to.

In this episode we welcome poet-turned rapper and Salinas native LaSofaQueen. She is getting ready to head out to Los Angeles on May 1-3 to compete in TeamBackpacks  Mission Underground competition. We get her Salinas story and find out how she turned her poetry into rap songs. We also discuss Cujos band Warcorpse opening up for Metalachi in Santa Cruz and your usual Salinas Underground banter.

This week we bring you another on location edition of Salinas Underground. Isaac from Street Low Magazine was gracious enough to give us three all-access passes to last Sundays car show, and we took full advantage. Listen as we discuss the mountie hat of what could possibly be the oldest police officer in the Salinas PD, a fruit stand with more flavors than there's fruit in the world and interview two young rap artists from the bay area. From San Jose we talk to Outrageous Karina and from Oakland we talk to Freddy Benz. Oz also goes in depth, talking about the recently approved Ferini Ranch and Harper Canyon subdivisions, that will be built around Toro Park.

In this episode we welcome the Local Urban Gardeners. They are a group from Salinas that have an idea of putting a garden and learning lab at Natividad Creek Park. We talk about the origins of the group and the goal of the learning lab. In a city like Salinas that calls itself the Salad Bowl of the world, we should have community gardens in every neighborhood. 

This week on Salinas Underground, we give a recap of The Letters Home show in the basement of the XL Public House. We also talk about the upcoming John Steinbeck birthday celebration on February 28. Oz continues his Salinas soccer campaign, did you know Salinas love soccer, and Cujo keeps you up to date with Cujo's Metal Minute.

This episode our guest is another one of Salinas' great citizens, our friend Marcy. Marcy was raised in Salinas and currently lives in Sacramento as an advocate for people in abusive relationships. Although, not planned she is an excellent guest to talk about Oz's Newz topic of the day, the abusive actions of the Salinas City Council against its citizens. The council regularly asks the citizens of Salinas to give more. More time, more money, more appreciation, but Oz is asking them to be the change they want to be in Salinas. To have a functioning, healthy community we all need to work together and the "do as I say not as I do" attitude of the people running this town needs to stop. We also talk about the events happening the last couple of weekends of the month: Feb 21 Slayer day at the XL Public House, Feb 22 The Letters Home comes back to Salinas to do a show at the XL Public House, Feb 28 IPA fest at the XL Public House and it is John Steinbecks birthday. In this episode the guys talk about the exciting things planned for Salinas in the next month. The last week of February is going to be crazy!! Cujo's metal minute focuses on the Feb 22 performance of The Letters Home at the XL Public House. Oz keeps his soccer crusade going and also explains why if you build a farm in a lakebed you should expect it to flood from time-to-time. We also tell you how to get beer for a dollar and also how to drink more beer and only pay half the price. 

Salinas Underground Podcast is back with another episode. This week Oz focuses on the buzz generated about Salinas soccer on Reddit. If you haven't heard, a group a filmmakers is making a documentary about the Alisal men's soccer team and they just released the trailer. Well that trailer ended up on the front page of the MLS subreddit and created a lot of positive buzz about Salinas and it's wealth of soccer talent. Also, the newest edition of Pozole Eat's Out has him eating at Olivia's Cafe on Station Place. The interview is in Spanish, but we give a recap after the interview en ingles for all you monolinguals out there. 

This week we welcome the owner and founder of Salinas Valley Clothing Inc, Eduardo Esparza. Eduardo was born and raised in Salinas an founded Salinas Valley Clothing in 2011 as a way to express pride in our city and to change the perception both by locals and outsiders alike. We also have another edition of Cujo's Metal Minute, Oz explains the new tax measures in effect in Salinas and one that might force the city back into a courtroom, and we bring you the audio of Pozole Eats Out at Mi Tierra Restaurant.

This week our guest is Salinas born and raised blues-folk musician Sean Schiveley. Yes, Salinas grows Blues musicians as well as lettuce. Cujo updates the Metal Minute..Oz answers Councilmen Barrera's question in The Californian of "where is the outrage?" over the recent violence...and the newest edition of Posole Eats Out has him venturing next door to Mi Tierra

Our first episode of the year is different from all our previous episodes. In this episode we introduce 3 new segments to our show that will become weekly features. Cujo begins his Metal Minute, which is an event calendar that spans from San Francisco to Santa Barbara. Oz starts a news segment covering the local news items that get his attention every week. Posole's segment is called Posole Eats Out and is a weekly introduction to new restaurants in Salinas.

The best part of doing a weekly podcast for over 8 months at a bar? When your guests reschedule at the last minute one of your previous guests might come in for a beer and sit in for an hour. Or two! Our last show of the year was designed to be relaxed as we waited for the new year and our new format. What happened was a two hour talk about international politics. It is a really fun episode. 

This week we welcome the 831 Empire to the podcast. The 831 Empire is the Monterey County chapter of an international group of San Francisco 49er supporters groups. Besides being die-hard supporters of their team, they also support the community. This episode was recorded several hours after the 49ers tough loss to the Raiders but they powered through.

The annual Parade of Lights in downtown Salinas passes in front of the Public House so we decided to set up and record from the sidewalk. We do our best to narrate the events of one of the largest events in Salinas. New York City has its Thanksgiving Day Parade and this is our response.

The burrito contest is still alive and kicking, new segments are on their way and we also have an update on the U-17 soccer team that Baldo and a group are planning. The soccer idea is really making waves locally and on Reddit so that is one you are going to want to stay updated on.

This week we talk to Franky from In Your Face Productions, a group bringing in bands from all over the West Coast to an awesome venue in Salinas. This all ages venue at the Epek Print-shop has been consistently putting on great shows and have plans well into the future. Listen to get all the updates. 

This is the fourth month that we are bringing you the Cherry Beans Open Mic during the First Friday Artwalk in Downtown Salinas and the house was packed for this one. There were people all over the cafe and even some that had to stand right outside the door! You don't need to worry about any of that as the whole show is in this one episode.

What do you do when a band from Pasadena stops by your city's artwalk to do a show before going on to play in San Francisco? You interview them! This is our interview with The Letters Home a Soul-Rock band from Pasadena that brought down the house at the XL Public House this Friday.
