  • Unspoken: So What Am I Supposed to Do About It?

    02/08/2020 Duration: 28min

Read: John 4:4-42 I wasn't even born when slavery or Jim Crow was around.  I have nothing to do with the police in Minneapolis.  I have no control over what policies congress enacts.  Even if we acknowledge racism exists, it feels like it's someone else's problem.  We don't consider ourselves racist and so much of this problem is the result of decisions, policies, and systems that were created before we were born and/or we had no say-so in.  So what exactly am I supposed to do about it? In John 4, when Jesus goes through Samaria, He steps into the midst of a bitter racial tension that had been festering for nearly a millennium. Their feud was created by people, policies, and decisions that occurred long before He came to earth, long before He set foot in that region. Yet Jesus' simple actions there, provide each one of us an example that has the power to change our world today. *This is the final installment of a three part series called Unspoken: A Conversation on Race and Other Things We Don't Like to Tal

  • Unspoken: Aren't We Supposed to be Colorblind?

    26/07/2020 Duration: 24min

Read: Genesis 1:27 Mark 7:24-30 Ephesians 4:1-16 Revelation: 7:9-10 "Racism isn't really a problem for me, I don't see color." This phrase and others like it come up frequently around the topic of race.  Is "colorblindness" a realistic goal though?  Is that even possible?  And even if it's possible, is that helpful or biblical way to think about race? Join us as we explore what scripture says about these questions and more in week 2 of our sermon-series Unspoken: A Conversation About Race and Other Things We Don't Like to Talk About. • Unspoken: Is Racism Really a Problem Anymore?

    19/07/2020 Duration: 27min

Read: Nehemiah 1:1-11 In the past 6 decades, America has made tremendous strides when it comes to racial justice. With the passing of the Civil Rights Act, it's no longer okay or legal to discriminate against someone based on the color of their skin. Our communities and schools are more diverse than ever.  And we may not know anybody anymore who's openly a racist.   So many of us may wonder why are so many people still upset about racism?  Why can't people get over it? Is this really a problem anymore? The answer to these questions often lie, not in what is said, but in what's unspoken.   *This is part 1 of a three part series called Unspoken: A Conversation on Race and Other Things We Don't Like to Talk About. • What's Bothering You?

    12/07/2020 Duration: 20min

Read: Nehemiah 1:1-11 There are alot of little things that bother us in life: traffic, when your internet crashes, the hairs on a banana.  Those things are annoying, but what about when it's a big thing that's bothering us? Our country, poverty, injustice. What can we do about it?  Perhaps, when something is bothering us, we can take our cue from Nehemiah.   *The outline for this sermon comes from Warren Wiersbe's book, Be Determined. • Dealing with the Future

    05/07/2020 Duration: 32min

Read: James 4:13-17 On January 1 what did you imagine 2020 would hold?  I'll guess that it didn't include COVID-19, masks, or social distancing.  Try as we might, it's impossible for us to know what the future holds.  So what are we supposed to do? How can we plan? How can we keep from worrying?  Listen this week as Denton Baptist Association directer, Morgan Malone, shares a timely message from God's word on how we can deal with the future.
