Episodes

  • David Fincher – Se7en

    18/07/2016 Duration: 01h03min

Se7en is a psychological thriller that grabs from the get-go and doesn’t let go. It’s so affecting, so dark, so gruesome and extreme that the film may make you see things that aren’t even there. With excellent performances, a rock-solid script and masterful direction, Se7en is as engrossing a movie today as it was twenty years ago. It has staked its claim as one of the best films of the 90’s. Join us next week for The Game. • David Fincher – Alien³

    11/07/2016 Duration: 01h43s

Alien 3 is a film. David Fincher directed it. It’s…not great… Hmmm…it’s…definitely a full-length feature film in the Alien franchise. That is a fact. Join us next week for Se7en! • David Fincher – Prologue

    03/07/2016 Duration: 26min

David Fincher is the next director we’ll be covering on Direct. He got his start in music videos and, like Scott and Cameron before him, burst onto the scene with face-huggers in Alien3. From Fight Club to Zodiac to Gone Girl, Fincher has been thrilling audiences for more than two decades, with plenty of style along the way. It should be a fun ride. Join us next week for Alien3. • Guillermo del Toro – Epilogue

    23/05/2016 Duration: 42min

We have three top-notch helmers to choose from: * David Fincher (Fight Club, Se7en, The Social Network, Gone Girl) * Christopher Nolan (Memento, The Dark Knight, Inception, Interstellar) * Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Punch Drunk Love, There Will Be Blood) Click here to vote! • Guillermo del Toro – Crimson Peak

    15/05/2016 Duration: 01h04min

Guillermo del Toro’s most recent film is a deep, creepy, personal story with ghosts in it. With excellent performances from top actors, strong metaphorical overtones, and face stabs, this film may be best viewed in context to his previous movies. Eric and Levi had differing opionions on the film, but could agree on one thing—it is inexcusably del Toro. Join us next week for our Guillermo del Toro epilogue. • Guillermo del Toro – Pacific Rim

    09/05/2016 Duration: 01h03min

Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim is a stupid fun action flick with big monsters punching big robots in their big faces. It’s a fun, if inconsistent ride through a detailed and expansive mythos. What it lacks in story, character, and (sometimes) logic, it makes up for in PUNCHING MONSTERS IN THE  FACE!!!* Monster + Punch = FACE!!! *Monsters were punched in the face in the making of this movie. • Guillermo del Toro – Hellboy II: The Golden Army

    01/05/2016 Duration: 01h02min

Hellboy II is a sequel with teeth (and tooth faeries). Guillermo del Toro’s follow up to his 2004 comic book flick has a little more of everything. Tons of practical effects, big action set pieces, and big choices for a lot of characters. But do the cartooney aspects outweigh the rip-roaring fun of the movie? Light up come Cubans, listen to Barry Manilow, and tun a cop car into grass. It’s Hellboy time! And join us next week for Pacific Rim. • Guillermo del Toro – Pan’s Labyrinth

    25/04/2016 Duration: 01h02min

Pan’s Labyrinth is a mythical and mystical juxtaposition of two engaging universes. In one, a brooding tyrant rules with a cruel and iron fist – representing, perhaps, one of the greatest villains in movie history. In the other, a cadre of beautifully grotesque creatures guide a young girl through a world falling apart. This sister film to del Toro’s The Devil’s Backbone is a master work of cinema, and in many ways may be Guillermo’s opus. Join us next week for Hellboy II: The Golden Army. • Guillermo del Toro – Hellboy

    18/04/2016 Duration: 01h03min

Hellboy is a detailed, wild ride that appeals directly to Levi and Eric’s geeky sensibilities. It also represents a unique and outstanding entry into the comic book genre. Plus, there are plenty of del Toro-isms to go around. Lovecraftian monsters? Check. Catholic symbolism? Check. Glowsticks? Check. Hellboy is a big story that goes down smooth. Bravo, Guillermo. • Guillermo del Toro – The Devil’s Backbone

    04/04/2016 Duration: 01h03min

“Limbo juice! Limbo juice! La la la la Limbo Juice! Fill your cup, drink it up! Everybody loves that limbo juice!” We watched The Devil’s Backbone this week, and were pretty blown away. The film opens up like a blooming flower the more you think about it, and it has a final half-hour that rivals some of the best cinematic experiences. So put some gold in your leg, threaten people with knives, sharpen a spear with broken glass, and knock over a watch pitcher. Here we go! And join us next week for Blade II. • Guillermo del Toro – Mimic

    28/03/2016 Duration: 01h03min

Mimic is an uneven ride through a deep and intricate del Toro world. There were some things we really loved, some we found laughable, and others that had us scratching our heads. So create an ant farm, click your spoons together, (maybe) become pregnant from a bug bite, and join us. It’s Mimic time! • Guillermo del Toro – Cronos

    21/03/2016 Duration: 01h01min

Cronos is Guillermo del Toro’s first feature film, and while it’s a bit rough around the edges it’s the type of film that sticks with you. With macabre imagery, morbid curiosity, and Ron Perlman’s broken nose, there’s a lot to take in. So wind up the golden bug, sleep in a toy box, and rip your skin off. Let’s go! • Guillermo del Toro – Prologue

    13/03/2016 Duration: 30min

Guillermo del Toro is our next director on Direct! The voting margin was razor-thin, but in the end the stylized Mexican director who has brought us Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth, and Pacific Rim took the crown. Aside from the cinematic experiences he has brought us, Del Toro is unique in that he is almost as well known for the movies he hasn’t made. What really endears him to us is his inherent geekiness, and the fervor with which he builds magnificent worlds. • Edgar Wright – Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

    31/01/2016 Duration: 01h00s

Edgar Wright took a departure from his pasty-white British protagonists, and embarked on a journey of new discovery with a pasty-white Canadian protagonist. This week, we watched the ultra-kinetic coming-of-age video game sim known as Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. The film is a stage-based, third person brawler with character-driven set pieces and an impressive cast. It’s a mundane epic that punches the highlights out of your hair. Eric and Levi had a great time watching it. Join us next week for The World’s End. • Edgar Wright – Hot Fuzz

    24/01/2016 Duration: 01h51s

A quaint place in the country unfolds into a nightmare conspiracy of devious proportions. We watched Hot Fuzz this week, and took in the lunchable mega-sandwich that is the screenwriting wizardry of Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg. This movie folds in on itself more times than the Tasmanian Devil doing origami, and we couldn’t get enough! Join us next week for Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. • Edgar Wright – Shaun of the Dead

    17/01/2016 Duration: 59min

It’s a rip-roarin’ zombie adventure with TONS of heart. We watched Shaun of the Dead this week and used it as an opportunity to have deep existential conversations. This comedy where a kid has to blow his mom’s head off, contemplate suicide, and make amends with his dying step-father was a real treat! Join us next week as we watch Hot Fuzz.
