Episodes

  • BWG: Ep. 105 - Women's March

    22/01/2017 Duration: 51min

It was a big weekend for your hosts and for millions of women around the world. We were just two of the attendees at the Women's March on Washington and after hours of being the presence of powerful women, we sat down to discuss our day, our emotions, and where we hope to go from here. We highlight some of the speakers, including feminist heroes like Gloria Steinem, Ashley Judd, and Janet Mock. And we both try to grapple with white feminism and our next steps forward. And, as always, we finish with recommendations for each other. Follow us on Twitter @BWGPodcast

  • BWG: Ep. 104 - Board Games

    15/01/2017 Duration: 44min

In this week's podcast, your hosts discuss their love of board games of all shapes and sizes. They debate the best type of games to play with family and friends and try to figure out why so many people have stopped playing games. Is it all Monopoly's fault?! Becca also advises Shannon on how to begin hosting her own board game night. Listeners, if you've got any good games to share please message us and we'll give them a shot! We're always looking for something new because, as always, we finish with recommendations for each other. Follow us on Twitter @BWGPodcast

  • BWG: Ep. 103 - Alternate Universes

    08/01/2017 Duration: 34min

Sometimes we wonder if this is the darkest timeline and we're sure we aren't the only ones. Many shows and movies explore the concept of Alternate Universe (AUs), either in a one-off episode or as the premise for the entire plot. We discuss what draws audiences and showrunners to other dimensions and timelines and why there are always so many goddamn Zeppelins flying around in them. And, as always, we finish with recommendations for each other. Becca picks some music this week, with the folk-y artist Radical Face. Shannon picks Margaret Atwood's feminist classic, The Handmaid's Tale, a story which is becoming more and more relevant each day. Follow us on Twitter @BWGPodcast

  • BWG: Ep. 102 - 2016 in Review

    01/01/2017 Duration: 41min

A few days before Christmas, we sat down to record our last episode of 2016. We spend some time bashing 2016, the year that really let us down. (And this was before Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds died, people!) We also collect our thoughts on the shows that debuted in 2016, including which ones are keepers (Take My Wife! Full Frontal with Samantha Bee! Fleabag!) and which ones we want everyone to stop slobbering over already (Westworld!). We get some sage advice from Zach about how to move forward into 2017 and both make New Years Resolutions to tackle shows in our backlog. And, as always, we finish with recommendations for each other, but this time we limit ourselves to two of our favorite shows of the year. Becca picked the wonderful drama Humans and Amazon's Fleabag. Shannon picked ABC's Speechless and Seeso's Take My Wife. Follow us on Twitter @BWGPodcast

  • BWG: Ep. 101 - Allegiance and Broadcasting Broadway

    18/12/2016 Duration: 45min

Your bespectacled hosts ventured to the movie theatre this week to see a one night only showing of "Allegiance: A New Broadway Musical" starring George Takei and Lea Salonga. We discuss the highlights of the production, it's great interpretation of activism, and our wishes for more theatre productions to follow suit. Shannon also gives some insight to the obstacles theatre companies face when trying to bring theatre to your various screens. And, as always, we finish with recommendations for each other. Becca offers the utterly-bingeable show "Search Party" and Shannon does the same with Netflix's new "White Rabbit Project." Follow us on Twitter @BWGPodcast

  • BWG: Ep. 100 - State of the Podcast

    11/12/2016 Duration: 28min

Wooohooooo! We've made it to Episode 100 and so have you. We sat down this week to do a State of the Podcast. We check in with each other, talk about plans and hopes for the future, and take some time to congratulate each other for a job well done so far (particularly with predicting movie sequels that Hollywood has decided to revive thanks to our suggestions!). And, as always, we finish with recommendations for each other. Becca gives her stamp of approval to the movie Arrival. Shannon suggests a re-watch of Black Sails, a show that Becca previously suggested to her. Follow us on Twitter @BWGPodcast

  • BWG: Ep. 99 - Gilmore Girls

    04/12/2016 Duration: 01h05s

This week's focus is solely on Gilmore Girls and the new episodes released on Netflix. (So, spoilers obviously!) We discuss the highs and lows and open up the conversation to the oft mentioned Arnaldo and Simone, two of Becca's friends who have very different Gilmore experiences. So, join us as we take a stroll through Stars Hollow and relive the Gilmore nostalgia. And, as always, we finish with recommendations for each other. Simone and Arnaldo offer up the TV show Sliders (on Netflix), Becca wants us all to watch the movie Sing Street (also on Netflix) and Shannon heartily approves of the new Disney movie Moana and it's outstanding soundtrack. • BWG: Ep. 98 - Thanksgiving

    20/11/2016 Duration: 37min

With Thanksgiving looming, we decided to discuss the pitfalls of family events and how well our media portrays them - from the hijinks of HIMYM's Slapsgiving to the Butterball Hotline of The West Wing. We also check in with each other since it's still pretty obvious we're not fully recovered from the election (and won't be for a long time). And, as always, we finish with recommendations for each other. Becca reaffirms her pick with Madam Secretary and adds on the new MTV show Sweet/Vicious. Shannon looks forward to the one-night-only cinema screening of Allegiance: The Musical, being played in theaters all across the country. Follow us on Twitter @BWGPodcast

  • BWG: Ep. 97 - The Aftermath

    13/11/2016 Duration: 42min

Listeners, we are still going through the stages of grief, and probably will be for some time (two years?). This election served as an "aha" moment for both of us and we both have discovered that shouting into an echo chamber isn't enough. We have to do more in order to make the world a better place for ourselves, our friends, and our loved ones. So, we get through the catharsis of finally talking about our loss and then look forward to what we can do now to make a difference. There are no recommendations this week apart from us urging you to do the same. Follow us on Twitter @BWGPodcast

  • BWG: Ep. 96 - The Election

    06/11/2016 Duration: 34min

Like it or not, the election is only a few days away. If you're like us, you are probably counting the seconds until you don't have to see political ads during your favorite TV shows or see yet another stump speech on the news. We take some time to discuss our coping mechanisms for when this is all over - what shows to self medicate with, and options for what to do after you've voted on Election Day. So, please remember to vote on Tuesday. We'll see you on the other side. And, as always, we finish with recommendations for each other. Becca brings the Ava DuVernay documentary, "13th" to the table and Shannon suggests re-watching "The Debate" episode of Parks and Recreation. Follow us on Twitter @BWGPodcast

  • BWG: Ep. 95 - Empty Violence

    30/10/2016 Duration: 01h02min

Your bespectacled hosts try to tackle entertainment's current fascination with empty violence. With the newest brutal murder on The Walking Dead still weighing on our minds, we parse out what's necessary and what is decidedly not. We also take documentaries and real life violence into account. Mostly, we discover that gore is something we never want and we end up pleading with Hollywood to cut it out already! We want to be entertained, not punished. And, as always, we finish with recommendations for each other. Becca recommends Black Mirror, especially the wonderful queer episode "San Junipero" and Shannon recommends the PBS documentary "Hamilton's America" even if you're not a Hamilton buff. Follow us on Twitter @BWGPodcast

  • BWG: Ep. 94 - Documentaries

    23/10/2016 Duration: 01h13min

For this week's episode, we take on Documentaries, the mother of all categories. We try to boil down the many, many, many subsets of documentary feature films and what makes a successful doc - both for the filmmaker and the viewer. We both did lots of research in the lead up to this episode with the hope that we would have a handle on the wide range of docs out there, but we still only manage to touch the surface. And, as always, we finish with recommendations for each other. Becca recommends the new animated movie Storks and Shannon recommends the utterly binge-able reality competition Skin Wars. • BWG: Ep. 93 - Sky High 2: Budget Cuts

    16/10/2016 Duration: 32min

Listeners, we finally have a sequel idea! It's been a long wait, but we think we've hit the jackpot with Sky High 2: Budget Cuts. We discuss why the original cult classic deserves a follow up, how we would improve it (Warren Peace and Layla 4eva!!!), and how we give The Rock the role of his lifetime. We also take some time to check in on the new Fall TV shows we profiled last week. And, as always, we finish with recommendations for each other. Follow us on Twitter @BWGPodcast

  • BWG: Ep. 92 - Fall TV 2016

    09/10/2016 Duration: 01h07min

It's here! It's here!!!! Pilot season is finally upon us! We've been talking about this episode for a long time and now is our chance to discuss all the TV we've been testing over these past few weeks. Becca, of course, goes above and beyond with her selections. Shannon just boils it down to a few keepers. So, at the end of this episode, you'll have a nice grasp on what to watch and what to avoid at all costs. And, as always, we finish with recommendations for each other. Follow us on Twitter @BWGPodcast

  • BWG: Ep. 91 - Shannon's Real Life Book Launch

    02/10/2016 Duration: 49min

It's a big day at BWG! If you're a longtime listener, you already know that co-host Shannon wrote a lesbian romance novel. The journey to getting Sing Me Home published has been documented on this podcast in bits and pieces, but this episode tells the whole story from start to finish. You'll hear Becca's speech from the official book launch (recorded live!) and an excerpt from the book, as well as a little Q&A about the whole publishing process. And, as always, we finish with recommendations for each other. Follow us on Twitter @BWGPodcast

  • BWG: Ep. 90 - After AfterEllen

    25/09/2016 Duration: 41min

Well, 2016 continues to suck! The newest strike to add to the list is that the world renowned lesbian pop culture and entertainment website, AfterEllen, effectively shut down this week. Becca and Shannon try to fathom why and how we missed the warning signs. We also list the few alternatives out there and look for a silver lining in this devastating loss to the LGBT and Queer community. And, as always, we finish with recommendations. Follow us on Twitter @BWGPodcast

  • BWG: Ep. 89 - The Great British Bake Off

    18/09/2016 Duration: 48min

You've probably heard the news by now - The Great British Bake Off has lost its soul. Between the move to Channel 4 and the loss of Mel and Sue (and the possible loss of Mary and Paul, too) the show we know and love is no more. As we continue to hold this current season dear, we discuss why the GBBO is the perfect show for so many viewers, why friendship and sexually tinged puns matter, and why other reality shows get it ALL wrong. And, as always, we finish with recommendations for each other. Follow us on Twitter @BWGPodcast

  • BWG: Ep. 88 - Patriotism

    11/09/2016 Duration: 42min

It's Becca's birthday! So, she got to pick the topic and OF COURSE she chose something soccer related. We discuss Megan Rapinoe's decision to kneel for the National Anthem, following the lead of Colin Kaepernick and others who have peacefully protested at sporting events over the years. We talk about the history of the anthem and try to unravel the meaning behind our flag, the song, and why so many people cherish both. We also brainstorm new ideas for a easier to sing and more inspiring anthem and definitely come up with some gems. And, as always, we finish with recommendations for each other. Follow us on Twitter @BWGPodcast

  • BWG: Ep. 87 - Good, Bad, and Ugly Plot Twists

    04/09/2016 Duration: 45min

For this episode, we take on the good, bad, and ugly plot twists that we've seen in our time as consumers of media. We discuss why some twists are just plain lies and how others make for good viewing. We also pick out some of our favorites as well as the plot twist tropes that make our blood boil. Mainly, we're mad as hell and we're not going to take it anymore! And, as always, we finish with recommendations for each other. Follow us on Twitter @BWGPodcast

  • BWG: Ep. 86 - Streaming and Take My Wife

    28/08/2016 Duration: 57min

We get back to business this week after our Olympic slump by taking on the behemoth that is Netflix and the advent of streaming services. We were inspired thanks to the new Seeso show "Take My Wife" which we both love unconditionally forever and ever and recommend without a doubt. We discuss the highs and lows of streaming, where we want to see Netflix go from here, and why Hulu is just plain garbage. And, as always, we finish with recommendations for each other. (It's to rewatch "Take My Wife," let's be real.) Follow us on Twitter @BWGPodcast
