OUR COMMON  GROUND with Janice Graham  OCG Special with LIVE interviw with Marissa Alexanderfrom the Duval County Jail 2 pm ET      Friday, May 11, 2012 Marissa Alexander faces 20 years in prison for Standing Her Ground. Her husband beat her many times and while and in defending herself from one more beating, Alexander fired a warning shot into the ceiling. That shot saved her life. However when she was accused of assault, the court did not grant her protection under  the FL Stand Your Ground defense.    Today in a sentencing hearing she faces going to prison for 20 years.  We will hear from Marissa as she tells her story.   Learn more.

OUR COMMON GROUND with Janice Graham  "Speaking Truth to Power and Ourselves"   The Case of Marissa Alexander  Marissa Alexander was in the fight of her life against an abusive husband who, according to her, had every intention of killing her. After 18 months  in jail, she awaits trail on three counts of of aggravated assault with no intent to harm, and faces a minimum 20 years in prison. George Zimmerman, meantime, leaves jail.  The judge in the case dismissed Alexander’s motion to receive immunity under the “Stand Your Ground”. More than a dozen states have passed new laws designed to impede voters at every step of the electoral process through nefarious voter registration requirements.  If these laws stand, it is estimated that more than 25% of the Black people who voted for Barack Obama will be ineligible or restricted from voting in 2012.  Many of these laws are in violation of the Voting Rights Act of 1985.
