  • A new climate strategy for the EU | 19 March 2019

    21/03/2019 Duration: 01h48min

This event featured a panel discussion on the recent European Commission communication for a new, long-term climate strategy for the EU entitled “A Clean Planet for All: A European Strategic Long-Term Vision for a Prosperous, Modern, Competitive and Climate Neutral Economy.” The communication, issued in November 2018, was presented by Raffaele Mauro Petriccione, Director General in the European Commission’s Department for Climate Action (DG CLIMA). Petriccione highlights how past proposals, such as the 2011 Roadmap, have relied heavily on strategies that keep existing systems in place, such as carbon capture storage. This new communication seeks to change this by proposing more radical changes to the economic system through a 2050 carbon neutrality target. The communication reveals that this target is both feasible and can be achieved in way that keeps Europe globally competitive. However, in order for these goals to be realized, the EU must find a way to redirect private investment towards carbon neutrality

  • Law and macroeconomics: legal responses to recessions

    12/03/2019 Duration: 01h03min

After the economic crisis of 2008, private-sector spending took nearly a decade to recover. Yair Listokin thinks we can respond more quickly to the next meltdown by reviving and refashioning a policy approach whose proven success is too rarely acknowledged. Harking back to New Deal regulatory agencies, Listokin proposes that we take seriously law’s ability to function as a macroeconomic tool, capable of stimulating demand when needed and relieving demand when it threatens to overheat economies.

Chair: Elina Ribakova, Visiting fellow, Bruegel Panel: Karen Mets, Senior Advocacy Adviser, Asylum and Migration, Save the Children International Marc-Olivier Padis, Head of Studies Department, Terra Nova Jean-Paul Tran Thiet, Senior Fellow & Former Board Member, Institut Montaigne

  • Diverging narratives: European policies and national perceptions

    27/02/2019 Duration: 01h19min

The rise of Eurosceptic parties all across Europe, the complex bargain after the Brexit vote, and the limited capability of EU institutions to react to economic and social crises have kicked off a comprehensive reform debate on the future of European integration. The debate has become more urgent due to diverging economic trends among the main economies participating in the Euro area. This event will discuss how narratives around the EU and the EMU are developing and what the politicians’ perceptions of them are. We will rely on two studies: in the first one the historical trends related to the euro-crisis were analysed through identifying the key topics in articles from influential newspapers in the four largest euro-area countries (Germany’s Süddeutsche Zeitung, France’s Le Monde, Italy’s La Stampa, and Spain’s El País). In particular, the authors of the study analyse where the blame for the crisis has been laid, with the aim of informing the current debate on euro-area governance reform. In the second s

  • Is the European automotive industry ready for the global electric vehicle revolution?

    12/02/2019 Duration: 01h25min

The automotive sector is currently at the centre of a global transformation, driven by four key trends: electrification, autonomous driving, sharing and connected cars. Bruegel fellows Reinhilde Veugelers and Simone Tagliapietra have recently published a policy contribution investigating the position of the European automotive industry in a scenario in which electrification substantially progresses. The results are encouraging for Europe: EU companies entered late the global electric vehicle race, but on the basis of their analysis it is not yet too late for them to catch up and make the best of this change. However, they also find that if Europe wants to succeed in the global electric vehicle race, its automotive industry will have to move into higher gear to meet the global – notably Chinese – competition. • The world’s response to China’s Belt and Road Initiative

    08/02/2019 Duration: 01h27min

We also discussed the Europe-Asia Connectivity plan and how China is reacting to the ongoing trade war. The event featured the presentations of two Bruegel papers: by Uri Dadush and Alicia Garcia-Herrero.

  • EU-Turkey energy and climate dialogues 2019

    31/01/2019 Duration: 02h14min

At this event we discussed the paper “Estimating the cost of capital for wind energy investments in Turkey”, written by Gustav Fredriksson, Simone Tagliapietra, and Georg Zachmann. The paper proposes an estimation of the cost of capital for wind energy investments in Turkey. Seeing as wind energy, like all renewable energies, is highly capital intensive compared to investments into conventional energy, the cost of capital represents a crucial element in every wind energy investment decision. Simply put, the high cost of capital substantially increases the cost of investing in wind power plants, putting investments at risk. Given the primary role of wind in Turkey’s 2023 energy strategy, it is therefore important to have a better understanding of this factor. The event was organised in collaboration with the Istanbul Policy Center and with the support of Stiftung Mercator.

  • Why facts and think tanks matter | 31 January 2019

    31/01/2019 Duration: 01h13min

In today’s world disinformation is increasingly becoming a tool used in the political arena. Think Tanks play a crucial role in combating this by providing fact-based analysis and policy advice. These are crucial in addressing the critical policy challenges we face in an era of turbulence and transition. The event also featured the launch of the 2018 Global Go To Think Tank Index report from the University of Pennsylvania’s Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program. Chair: Giuseppe Porcaro, Head of Communications and Events Panel: Tommaso Canetta, Fact-checker at Pagella Politica Sophie Gaston, Director of the Centre for Social and Political Risk, at the Henry Jackson Society, and Research Fellow at the London School of Economics and Political Science Stefani Weiss, Senior Expert, Bertelsmann Stiftung For more

  • Towards a new social contract | 24 January 2019

    25/01/2019 Duration: 01h25min

Globalization and rapid technological change have created opportunities but also intensified risks and insecurity. This event featured the presentation of the recently published World Bank report “Towards a New Social Contract: Taking on Distributional Tensions in Europe and Central Asia”, which shows that societies need a welfare state now more than ever. Insecurity and risks are not shared equally: distributional tensions between groups (generations, workers, regions) are rising, and inequality of opportunity remains persistently high. The report shows that the current tax and transfer and markets regulation systems – the existing social contract – are not very effective in coping with these distributional tensions. Dissatisfaction with the status quo and the trust deficit towards the current social and political arrangements have resulted in voting polarization and rise of populism. How would a renewed social contract look like? The report highlights three policy principles which, considered jointly, s

  • Rules-based trading system ad EU-Australia, 22 January 2019

    22/01/2019 Duration: 55min

In June 2018, the EU and Australia launched negotiations for a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement. Australia’s position in the world as a top 20 trading nation is underpinned by its advocacy for an open global economy and by trade agreements that ensure the lowest possible barriers to trade and investment. The Australia-EU FTA negotiations seek to provide new opportunities for companies and consumers, and set the benchmark for what can be achieved between like-minded partners in global trade. At this event we welcomed the Australian Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, Senator the Hon Simon Birmingham, on his inaugural official visit to Brussels. He delivered a speech on the Australia-EU bilateral trade, the FTA negotiations, and the importance of multilateral rules-based trading system. The speech was followed by a Q&A session.
