Foreign chemicals, new viruses, weakened immune systems—they all work against us in the aging process. Dr. Daniel Casafi, a Canadian naturopath with a PhD in chemistry and a Master’s degree in herbology, talks about what we’re up against in this wild and crazy world we live in, and how we can fortify ourselves for “quality of life” in our waning years.  What about helping people in conflict areas around the globe? Amit Hooda, founder the CEO of Heavenly Organics, tells us how he learned from his father the responsibility of sustaining Indian and Afghanistan farmers living among drug cartels and sex trades and how using their natural resources is paying off for them in big ways. Listen to what Shannon has to say about wind turbines and how some of our farmers are coping with complications few of them saw coming.

Ever wonder what essential oils to use when you look at all the myriad choices in GreenAcres Market? Well, Charlynn Avery from Aura Cacia is in studio this week to give you the soothing scoop on oils as perfume; oils as massaging agents; oils as healers. You can mix combinations of oils to promote better health and vitality. There’s just so much you can do with essential oils, it’s essential that we all learn together! Charlynn’s key suggestion: “Buy what speaks to you. (If Pier One doesn’t mind if we steal its commercial just for this post.) Your nose knows.”  Our gurus will visit with Mohammad al-Zaiti, an engineer who, as a Kansas student, got hungry for a taste of old-world goodness.  As soon as he graduated, he used his engineering skills to build a restaurant, and his hunger pangs to bring Amman, Jordan recipes to Lawrence. Today, GreenAcres Wichita carries his Mediterranean Delight hummus, tzatziki and pomegranate molasses. Um, um, good!

Our whole show this week has gone to the dogs! The gurus interview Beth Ericson, Obedience Director of Wichita’s Chisholm Creek Pet Resort and Sharon Sherman, Co-Founder of Pet Guard organic pet food. Both women have lots to say about raising healthy pets and being responsible, mature pet “parents.”  When you think of doggie day camp and obedience training, Chisholm Creek takes comfort and teaching to a whole new level.  Dogs can actually learn to dive into water and get out without being afraid. And they can board in the lap of luxury when their owners are on vacations, with families feeling confident watching their pets from afar via web cams. How does a WSU Shocker “room with view” sound?  It comes complete with TV, tuned to the Animal Planet channel or to cartoons.  Matt talks about the Top Five Benefits to Those Who Own Pets, and Sharon Sherman points out that if organic is good enough for us humans, it’s good enough for Fido. Woof!

Nell Newman, president of Newman’s Own Organics and the daughter of the late Paul Newman and actress Joanne Woodward, tells how she had to do some convincing before her dad lent money to her new enterprise: organic snacks and pet food.  But Nell and her partner won over “Pops,” paid back the seed money almost immediately and went on to fame and glory, returning  in time more than $30M by royalty agreement to her dad’s charities.  Some Wichita Facebookers pose some questions to Shannon about her “GreenAcres Cocktail with a Twist.” And, a Tulsa bread maker gives us the inside scoop on what makes terrific whole wheat bread and how patience is the number one ingredient to keeping the loaf moist, yeasty and just sweet enough.
