An Open Letter,” 1,332 signatories, including Musk, and Apple’s co-founder Steve Wozniak, called on AI labs to pause the training of advanced AI systems for at least six months.     The United States has announced hikes in fees for certain Non-Immigrant Visa application processing fees. The increment, published in the Federal Register on March 28, 2023, will be effective from May 30, 2023. The US government in the document says, “The fee for B-1/B-2 visitor visas, Border Crossing Cards for Mexican citizens aged 15 and above, and student and exchange visitor visas will increase from $160 to $185. Also, the fee for certain petition-based non-immigrant visas for temporary workers (H, L, O, P, Q, and R categories) will increase from $190 to $205. It says the NIV fees are set based on the actual cost of providing NIV services and are determined after conducting a study of the cost of such services.

    The Federal Government began an online registration of medical laboratories in Nigeria to enhance service delivery. Dr Tosan Erhabor, the Registrar of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria made this known in Abuja at a meeting with stakeholders and the agency’s consultants on automation led by Prof. Effiong Akpan of the University of Calabar. He called on stakeholders to avail themselves of the great opportunities offered by the new framework to enhance service delivery. Erhabor said that the registration would scale up efficiency, effectiveness, transparency, speed of service delivery, as well as data collation and management.

    Dangote Industries has completed its listing of the firm’s N200bn series 1 and 2 Bonds on Nigerian Exchange Limited. The Chief Executive Officer, Dangote Industries Limited, Mr Olakunle Alake, speaking at the closing-gong ceremony to commemorate the listing of the bond held at the Exchange on Wednesday, expressed delight after the listing. Alake, who was represented by the Group’s Chief Finance Officer, Mustapha Ibrahim further noted that the listing of the bond recorded participation from a wide range of investors including domestic pension funds, asset managers and insurance companies and further demonstrates investors’ confidence in Nigeria’s credit reality. The listing is the largest aggregate local currency bond issued in the capital market so far, within the year.

    Utah has become the first US state to require social media firms get parental consent for children to use their apps and verify users are at least 18. The governor says he signed the two sweeping measures to protect young people in the state. The bills will give parents full access to their children's online accounts, including posts and private messages. The move comes amidst heightened concern over the impact of social media on children's mental health. The bills also impose a social media curfew that blocks children's access between 22:30 and 06:30, unless adjusted by their parents.

Protesters must also seek consent from the people affected by the protests.The demonstrators will also be liable for paying damages to those harmed by their activities. The interior ministry also seeks the demarcation of areas where people can assemble and hold protests.

    A Ugandan MP who voted in favour of a bill that targets homosexual people has told the BBC that if the US withdrew funding in protest it would amount to modern genocide. The US government says there could be repercussions should the measure be signed into law by President Yoweri Museveni. MP Charles Ayume says that Uganda's sovereignty should be respected. He added that there were things he objected to in the US, but he did not want to interfere in the politics of that country.     A court in Kenya's capital Nairobi has barred Meta, Facebook's parent company, from laying off its content moderators pending the determination of a lawsuit that is challenging their planned dismissal. The labour court also barred Meta and its outsourcing firm, Sama, from hiring other moderators to replace the sacked ones. The lawsuit was filed by 43 Facebook moderators in Kenya, hired by Sama on behalf of Meta. They allege that the redundancy exercise being undertaken was unlawful.
