When God acts, and people respond differently to His action, Jesus warns that it can bring division. In this, Jesus invites us to declare the power in His name and to show up compassionately. The stakes are high, but they're worth it because He is coming to do something greater. We are the sent ones to bring Good News, not a burden. When He encountered a world needing better, Jesus leaned in and partnered with His people. He was sent to suffering and sends His followers to do the same. Matthew 10 reminds us that although we will be questioned, divided, called names, and threatened, He will give us answers and save us. He brings the truth, and He never leaves us. If we are sent to suffering, we can ask for wisdom, endurance, and presence. We have been sent to share with others what we have received through a life with Jesus. How do we do that? We follow Jesus’ compassionate heart, leaning in when it’s easy to draw back. His compassionate response to suffering is to commission His followers. Jesus’ words in Matthew 10:1-14 remind us of the ways we show up as compassionate disciple-makers. We speak and act, give and receive, stay and go. To show compassion is to suffer with another person. You can’t show compassion from far away; you have to get close, offering patience, service, and love to the suffering. When was the last time you felt lost in the dark? When we try to find good without God, we find ourselves far from the good God had in mind for us, trying to find our way in the dark. The Good News is that because of the promise fulfilled in Jesus, we have the opportunity to walk out of the darkness. The story of the gospel is a promise fulfilled that was set 700 years before Jesus' arrival on earth. Sparking a movement of disciple-makers takes extraordinary prayer and being able to reflect the characteristics of Jesus, especially forgiveness. What happens when people are united? Like orchestra members all tuned to the same note, unity occurs when people set their sights on the same thing together. Only then can a beautiful symphony be played. The Church is the same way. Jesus invites us to walk alongside Him to spark a movement of disciple-makers, with too many generations to count, in the city of Las Vegas and beyond. Paul experiences surrender, trust, and generosity on his journey to disciple-making, and he shares with the church in Philippi the impact of sacrifice. He reminds us that sacrifice is love in action, it is always costly, it builds legacy, and it is dying to self. Generosity is more than just a transaction, but an opportunity from God to invite transformation in your life and in the lives of those around you. Can you imagine what it's like standing at the doorstep of a defining moment? God invites us to trust Him more than ever before when it comes to the plans He has set out for us, even if we can't see the end from the beginning. The story of Paul and Barnabas in Acts 9 models for us what courage can do in the face of fear, especially when the other side leads to so much joy in Jesus' direction. Recognize what God is up to, trust that He is at work, and advocate for the blessing so others can join it too. Think about a goal you have accomplished. When you first set yourself on the path towards that end, you were committing to a new way of life until it was completed. Along the way, you became a new sort of person. God uses these seasons of effort to transform us. In Acts 9:1-19, God calls Saul and Ananias into something new. There would be beauty for them in the end, but the process took effort, surrender, and cost. How do you maintain perspective when you're in the thick of hard times?
