After the pure exhilaration of the playoff semi-final, there was quickly a realisation that Orient hadn’t achieved anything quite yet. But honestly, the way this season had gone, it felt like this was all just meant to be and was set up for a fairy-tale ending at Wembley. One team stood in our way, a talented, but not unbeatable Rotherham side, managed by the pantomime villain of the lower leagues, Steve Evans. Fans queued around the corner at Brisbane Road for tickets whilst players helped in the club shop, selling everything from flags to foam fingers. More than 24,000 O’s fans walked down Wembley way on the 25th May 2014, full of excitement for this grand finale. The sun beat down on us as the teams emerged and by the time it had set, we would know our fate. Orient had made history. 86 points was their highest tally in a single season and after a flourish in the last two games, they secured a 3rd place finish. And whilst missing out on automatic promotion was disappointing, they still had a chance to do it – in the best way possible, the playoffs and a trip to Wembley. But to get there they had to beat a strong Peterborough team over two legs, who had finished in 7th place. Those two games would prove to live long in the memory for Orient fans, for so many reasons. In Episode One we heard how external expectations weren’t particularly high heading into the 2013/14 season but a consistent, talented squad led by Russell Slade had other ideas. Those in charge at Brisbane Road had been building a squad that they thought could challenge against the might and budget of teams like Sheffield United, Wolves, Brentford and Rotherham. Orient headed into pre-season settled and quietly confident but no one could have realistically predicted what was to come. There was magic in the air in E10. A feeling engulfed every player, every coach, every member of staff, and every single fan and brought them all together as one. Every other Saturday, Brisbane Road tingled with excitement and togetherness. We moved as one that year. A phenomenon that is rare in football and one that hadn’t been seen in Leyton for a generation, at least. It was a club united.
