According to the Center for Disease Control, on average, 130 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose. Right now, inside a Massachusetts federal courtroom, Massachusetts attorney general Maura Healey is up against pharmaceutical giant Purdue Pharma LP, maker of the controversial drug OxyContin, and its owners, the Sackler family. In Commonwealth v., Purdue Pharma L.P, the suit alleges that the Sackler family benefited financially by allegedly pushing painkillers onto doctors and patients while reaping billions over the course of a decade, all while contributing to the deadly opioid epidemic and impacting thousands nationwide.
