Shirushi: What’s their importance? The Shirushi (Reiki symbols) indeed do have their function. They do their ‘thing’ when used both during local and distance healing, as well as attunements. Choku Rei, Seiheiki, Hon sha ze sho nen and Dai Ko Myo are the four traditional symbols used within the Usui Shiki Ryoho Reiki. There are however other reiki branches which uses the same symbols such as Jikiden Reiki. Other Reiki traditions such as the Raku Kei Reiki uses symbols such as Raku, Fire Serpent and more. The four traditional reiki symbols are not as secret as they are sacred. Using the Dai Ko Myo as example: It is made up by general Kanjis which are supposed to be known by fourth grade primary school students! It is not a symbol in and by itself, but when used in proper context it allows for the attunement process to take place. The HSZSN symbol is another form of kanji, albeit stylized, which are known by primary school students as well. Nothing super secret there, huh? Used in proper context – this symbol
