Synopsis

It was the 1980 Winter Olympics, and the United States was playing the Soviet Union in ice hockey. In those days the United States used only amateur hockey players, although we all knew that the Russians were professionals. In a tune up for the Olympics the Russians beat the U.S. team 10 to 3. It was truly a matter of men playing boys. I had a particular interest in our hockey team because one of the starting defensemen, Bill Baker, had lived in the dorm room next to me for two years at the University of Minnesota, and we had spent many hours in conversation. I really wanted Bill to do well, and like all Americans I wanted our whole team to do well. But to be honest, what we meant by doing well against the Russians was that they hold the Russians under ten goals.
