Christine chats with experienced registered yoga teacher Phyllis Haney, JD, MBA, E-RYT 500, about why hatha yoga appealed to her as a non-athletic and non-"Gumby" (flexible) person and her ongoing training. We wax philosophical about the origins of yoga in India and preceding spiritual philosophy and how yoga is practiced today in India and the United States including the different styles. Phyllis explains the benefits of deep breathing, core conditioning and balance work, especially as we age to prevent falls and related yoga poses. We also talk about the research that shows that practicing yoga can improve lower back pain,osteoporosis, asthma and diabetes.
