Off The Turf

Off The Turf is live for the final time this semester, as well as the final episode for Host Alex Sausville. After two semesters on the air, Alex concludes his year and a half as a member of the RTIP and discusses some final thoughts as the fall semester and his time in the RTIP comes to a close. 

Off The Turf is back on the air as the Global Racing Symposium is approaching. Host Alex Sausville is joined from the mid-atlantic by Erich Zimny of Charles Town and Chris Merz of the Maryland Jockey Club. With sports betting recently introduced in West Virginia, Erich discusses both sports betting and horse racing at the home of the Charles Town Classic. Chris talks with Alex about the upcoming winter meeting at Laurel Park and many of the improvements highlighting the future of Maryland racing. 

Off The Turf is back in action with RTIP Alumni Jordyn Egan joining the show, as well as current first semester RTIP student Shinobi Horikawa. Jordyn joins Off The Turf from the Maryland Horse Breeders Association, discussing the world of Maryland Racing as well as her experiences in the RTIP and Darley Flying Start Program. Shinobi joins the show in her first semester while being a dual major here at the U of A, talking about her experiences in the program and at the University.

Off The Turf is back! Host Alex Sausville is joined this week by RTIP Alumni Alexis Garske, Keith Doleshel and RTIP student David Range. Currently working with TVG, Alexis joins Off The Turf to talk about her career, as well as the founding of the widely popular initiative I Am Horse Racing. Keith comes on the show as the newest racing secretary for the NYRA's Aqueduct winter meet and RTIP student David Range makes his first appearance as a member of the Race Track Industry Program.

Off The Turf is live! Host Alex Sausville is joined RTIP alumni Chance Timm of Lane's End Farm and Rodney Nelson of Lone Star Park. Off The Turf also welcomes to the show RTIP student Diego Cervantes following a fantastic internship this summer at Los Alamitos. We will also have our weekly recap of racing around the world and much more!

Off The Turf is back for episode 5! Host Alex Sausville welcomes in RTIP Alumni and track announcer at Gulfstream Park Peter Aiello to the show, as well as RTIP student Giselle Lugo. Off The Turf continues the alumni series with Pete joining the show to discuss his time in the Race Track Industry Program and his experiences working as a track announcer throughout the racing industry. Giselle, a first semester student in the program discusses her time in the program, as well as her aspirations going forward in the racing industry.

Off The Turf is back and kicks off our RTIP alumni series with guests Jim Mulvihill, the Sr. Director of Betting Operations at Churchill Downs Incorporated, as well as Zach Taylor who was an intricate part of the re-opening of Arizona Downs. As well, we have a special appearance from current RTIP student Osvaldo "Smokey" Rivera who joins host Alex Sausville to discuss his recent internship with legendary quarter horse trainer Paul Jones and much more! Off The Turf was also very fortunate to have a brief appearance from a surprise guest during our interview with Jim Mulvihill, make sure to check it out!

Off The Turf is back with another episode as host Alex Sausville is joined by fellow Race Track Industry Program students Jacob Shepard and Mary Hodsden for this weeks show. Jacob, who made several appearances on the show last semester joins us to discuss the recent Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Mary joins Off The Turf as part of our new student introduction segment and discusses the program's recent trip to Kentucky, as well as her experiences as one of the newest members of the RTIP!

After some technical difficulties this past weekend the release of our 2nd episode here on Off The Turf has arrived. Host Alex Sausville was joined by fellow students Elise Peters and Michael Sandulli as the Race Track Industry Program prepared for their class trip to Kentucky. Elise discusses her newest venture of owning her own off the track thoroughbred and how that came to be. As well Off The Turf welcomes Michael to the RTIP as he begins his first semester at the University of Arizona. 

We are back here on Off The Turf as school is in session at the Race Track Industry Program at the University of Arizona. Host Alex Sausville chats with fellow student and returning guest Taylor Owens about her summer internship, as well as looking to what is ahead for the show for the fall semester and much more!

It's time for the final episode of the spring semester here on Off The Turf! Host Alex Sausville is joined by Curtis Linnell, the Executive Vice President of the Thoroughbred Racing Protective Bureau to discuss how they protect the racing public as well as the sport from corruption, as well as digital tattooing and more. As well, California Steward and former jockey Luis Juaregui joins Off The Turf to discuss his experiences in the racing industry, the recent changes being implemented at Santa Anita and the current state of racing in California. 

Off The Turf is back for the penultimate episode! As time winds down for the semester at the University of Arizona, host Alex Sausville is joined by two special guests, Marsha Kelly and Dionne Benson. Marsha talks with us about the difference between animal rights and animal welfare, as well as her experiences working in public relations with the greyhound racing industry. As well, Dionne Benson, the Executive Director of the Racing Medication and Testing Consortium discusses many different topics dealing with medication testing levels, the effects of certain medications and much more! 

A special week at the Race Track Industry Program where we have two guest speakers joining host Alex Sausville for this week's podcast! Scott Finley joins Off The Turf to discuss international racing and simulcasting, as well as his experiences in the racing industry. As well, Paul Monroe visits from Lone Star Park to discuss the marketing side of the business as opening day arrives this Thursday.

Off The Turf this week features a special discussion with California State Steward, Scott Chaney. Scott talks with host Alex Sausville about the recent changes in California racing including the new crop reform at Santa Anita Park. Scott also discusses other improvements coming for California racing, as well as what he deals with as a steward and much more!

For this weeks edition of Off The Turf special guest Izzy Trejo stops in to the Race Track Industry Program. Izzy, the Executive Director of the New Mexico Racing Commission, discusses with host Alex Sausville his experiences in the racing industry, as well as the continued progress in the New Mexico horse racing industry. Izzy joins the Off The Turf Podcast following a record breaking weekend of handle for New Mexico's derby prep race, the Sunland Derby.

This week on Off The Turf, host Alex Sausville is joined by fellow RTIP students Nick Fanucchi and Taylor Owens to discuss the road to the Kentucky Derby. In addition, we will  discuss many of the prep races in the upcoming weeks, as well as who will be in the starting gate on the first Saturday in May!

A special guest for this weeks edition of Off The Turf! RTIP alumni Andrew Offerman, the Director of Racing Operations at Canterbury Park joined us to discuss some of the great innovations for racing in Minnesota and much more! As well, host Alex Sausville will be  joined by fellow student Jacqueline Schumacher talking about how to use gaming as a way to promote and market horse racing. 

For the first time here on Off The Turf we have a guest speaker joining us for this weeks podcast! Frank Lamb, Director of Gov't Affairs with Wyoming Downs joins us to talk about Historical Horse Racing and the racing industry in Wyoming, as well as some of his racing experiences. As well, host Alex Sausville will be doing a segment talking about some of the newest venues in horse racing that will be opening up in the coming months throughout North America.

Host Alex Sausville is joined by fellow students of the Race Track Industry Program, Jayson Campbell and Jacob Shepard for this weeks episode. Jayson discusses some of his experiences working with steeplechase racing and its similarities with flat racing, while Jacob discusses finding the value in stallions who are neither proven or freshman. 

Host Alex Sausville is joined by fellow students of the Race Track Industry Program, Mitch Gerson and Nick Fanucchi for this week's episode. Mitch will be discussing some of the different wagers in horse racing and where their value is. Nick will be discussing the impact of sports betting and how racing can benefit.
