Our Strange Skies

In the 1980s, people started to come forward with their accounts of abduction at the hands, and technology, of alien beings. They were spurred on by one book to share their stories of kidnappers from the sky and the experiences on board their crafts. Communion by Whitley Strieber became a hugely successful book, thrusting alien abduction into the pop culture spotlight. The history of abductions goes back further, perhaps as far back as 1638. It undergoes evolution and transforms time and again, from the partially archaic abduction of Antionio Villas-Boas, to the strange case of Debbie Jordan-Kauble, the subject of Budd Hopkins' book, Intruders, who was implanted with an alien-human hybrid, only to have it removed during the pregnancy. Kentucky saw two really strange abduction cases during the years 1976 and 1977. The first involved three women leaving a diner at 11:15 on January 6th, 1976. A UFO appeared above them. All three were taken on board a craft and subjected to medical tests and torturous procedures. A year later, on January 27, 1977, a young man was abducted from his truck on the way home from a friends house. He was examined by machine-like beings and returned to his vehicle. Both cases share surprising similarities at a time when alien abductions were starting to become more common. What's up, ufonauts?! In Minutes of Our Mythology, Part Two, I look at the government's first examination of the UFO phenomenon: Project Sign. Throughout 1948, people from all walks of life reported UFOs to the government. Some were civilians, some were actual pilots and military personnel. They ran the gamut. By the time Project Sign came to an end, it had seen the death of a pilot pursuing a UFO, reports of all sorts of odd lights in the sky, and an extremely close encounter by two Eastern Airlines pilots who claimed to see an enormous cigar-shaped UFO with windows that shot a 50 foot flame out the end of it. In the 1980s, the government engaged in a heavy disinformation program, designed to control the perception of the UFO phenomenon. This story revolves around Paul Bennewitz, a physicist who believed that there was a harsh alien campaign against the human race. He surrounded himself with those that would help prove his theories correct. In June of 1959, a small missionary on the southern end of Papua, New Guinea experienced a number of UFO events over the course of two days that defy explanation to this day.
